Made Oculus Rift CUBES today.
-
I feel like the best bit of the Oculus is that you strap a screen to someone's eyes and they can't look away, not the VR bits.
-
@ADAMATOMIC @doougle Ah-haha -- that's definitely on the list to investigate. 3D is pretty cool for CUBES, though.

@LewieP with a controller, currently. Moving your head is a thing that's worth exploring more, but it's not an obvious fit.

@LewieP but the current version is really quite effective, even without the need to be constantly craning you head round, like most OR games

This code I am writing is magical as hell.
-
@haikus_by_KN magic is a really useful concept when programming. it's code that does things by means that are not at all apparent.
-
@haikus_by_KN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_%28programming%29 -- but I'm doing it to provide a concise way to script dialogue, with the logic hidden.
-
@haikus_by_KN Of course, hiding the logic means that I'm torturing it a fair bit - variables are invisibly assigned, etc.
-
@haikus_by_KN that's the hope! I did consider actually writing a full on DSL, but then sanity prevailed.
-
@haikus_by_KN @RobertWalter83 Does it work with Unity? I would be interested to see it, either way!
-
There a way to find missing scripts on SciptableObjects #unity3d?
-
@fastramdesign like, I have a ScriptableObject asset, which references a script, and then the script is deleted, and now it says "Missing"
-
@fastramdesign well, actually I want to just delete the ScriptableObject -- there's one per script containing Dialogue.
-
@RobertWalter83 I'm not, I've just mangled coroutines to get it looking nice. Similar logical structure, though.
-
@nachimir I am imagining you toiling away, surrounded by golden waves of swaying men. And other things, also made of men.

This fucking porn filter is such a stupid idea. It's clearly going to both let porn through, and block things that aren't porn.

Like, some stuff I enjoy looking at on the Internet, even I don't know if they're porn or not. So how an algorithm has any hope, idk...

Or, the way that it presumably ignores the existence of "https" (unless it just blocks on a domain level, I guess, but that's stupid)

@LawrieARussell Code. But I imagine it's a similar feeling.
-
@patrickashe @tigershungry *years
-
@patrickashe you don't even have a leather jacket!
-
Visual Studio insists on CRLF, Unity's file templates use LF. Both complain when things are inconsistent.
-
@banjoses but they get overwritten every time you upgrade Unity... (so I'm upgrading to 4.2 first)
-
@VitaminPowered only until you close it and open it again.
-
Searching some stuff I found in disassembled Unity code, I seem to have found alpha release notes for Unity 4.3. It's exciting stuff!
-
Genuinely don't know if I should post the link...
-
(Also, irritatingly, the trivial task I am currently trying to solve right now is actually possible in it. But not currently)
-
@jonbro Just trying to work out how much use the new stuff would be for us on Mutazione...
-
@radiodario yo, we should hang. Next week?
-
@mjntendency @SeeBeeWhitman @c_hedborg just run it for a friend.
-
@tef yes you will
-
@tef I was there yesterday. It was also hell. Sometimes it's that or Oxford Street.
-
So I'm starting to write this talk, and it's become two separate talks. Which should I give?
-
Option 1: a bit of a rant about the importance of the physical (controllers, screen, etc) to the experience of playing a videogame.
-
Or Option 2: some ways that designing physical things are different to designing digital things(when you get to do both halves of a project)
-
@kitrichardsonuk actually, tomorrow is perfect. Let's do it. My side of town or yours? (Though, where do you go during the day?)
-
Option 1 has a unifying thesis behind it, Option 2 is probably more humane and funnier. Option 2 also has more Look At My Stuff, though...
-
@smestorp impossible to relate, humanely, to people when talking about large groups of them.
-
@smestorp don't know it's better to not talk about them, or talk inhumanely about them?
-
@smestorp When it comes to larger issues, I think talking inhumanely is best -- easy to do evil accidentally when swayed by emotive stories.
-
@smestorp (see also: disproportionate response to deaths by terrorism vs car crashes, and so many other examples)
-
@kitrichardsonuk Sure, or, actually: Brick Lane/Spitalfields Market like old times? Got a few bits I want to buy round there.
-
@kitrichardsonuk (that preference is easily overridden by A Specific Place That's Good For Lunch)
-
@nachimir @Carachan1 there's always the internet for hanging out with all the people in the world that share your views.
-
@nachimir @Carachan1 which is way too cynical a view, really. But I do struggle to know what the world looks like not in the circles I'm in.
-
@nachimir @Carachan1 ha! Our replies crossed - me wanting to meet them, you despairing of meeting them.
-
@nachimir don't know if I'm just younger, or had a happier or less observant childhood.
-
RT @IVSoftware: We expect forums to be nasty sometimes. But I have never seen such horror as @Polytron's comments section: http://t.co/pQ8I…
-
@ellaguro I'm sure she has -- I'd've probably worded that tweet differently if hadn't been lazy and went for a RT.
-
@ellaguro The point I think I was making was: I've got no blame for anyone who leaves a situation rather than face that kind of abuse.
-
Depressing update to last RT: @ellaguro reminds me that @femfreq has seen worse. Also, it turns out I still had gamerfury.tumblr.com/ open.
-
What a lovely start to another week working in the videogame industry.
-
RT @leighalexander: But donot worry every body just stay super Positive & share the LOVE of gameing hehehehe ;-) B-)
-
@hannahnicklin but we did get the entire world using entirely ridiculous, childish words.
-

-
@LewieP @Carachan1 did a nice preview: rockpapershotgun.com/2013/07/22/hands-on-the-bureau-xcom-declassified/ (sadly lacking Peter Pan references, though)
-
@CaptainNono Going on their (lack of) response to Trayvon Martin, I wouldn't hold your breath.
-
@auntiepixelante @holagatosaurio The best stickers! I have some on my laptop. <3 <3 <3
-
These are the best stickers: hola.gatosaurio.com/ (where I got those rad stickers on my laptop from)
-
@Babylonian @retroremakes I keep wondering when the puns will run out. The puns never run out.
-
Or, an entire face done up like that amazing vector eyeball demo that made by I wish I could remember who.
-
"I have a very nice fruit matching game with challenging 20 levels and nice effects. I hope your website will have a nice place for my game"
-
@EvanBalster @vectorpoem @compositeredfox Yeah, but that's why it's great! It plays with stretching an established feel past breaking point.
-
@EvanBalster @vectorpoem @compositeredfox I am now curious to know what your eye would look like if the parameters were unclamped.
-
@EvanBalster @vectorpoem @compositeredfox Like, I am absolutely in love with this: computersclub.org/club/?p=3949
-
@jennatar @pkollar @ctplante Did you read Tom Sennett's blog about being that guy? tomsennett.tumblr.com/post/56708054499/video-games-aint-life-man
-
@Carachan1 @jennatar I wish I didn't have real-life connections to that guy.
-
@hannahnicklin @patrickashe Yeah, for sure. Would presumably need a court order to get Twitter to confirm once it's deleted/private.
-
@EvanBalster Your stuff is way cooler. But the choice'll always come down to the team's skills, and what the game needs from it.
-
I hope my already somewhat unhealthy attitude to the Internet never has the added stress of becoming a person who routinely receives abuse.
-
@haikus_by_KN @nachimir To be completely honest, for me the desire to create a cult of personality came before the game dev.
-
Whoo! Time taken to start this Unity project has went from 1m20 ish to 15 seconds-ish.
-
@tigershungry @doougle @JohnPolson @RamiroCorbetta @zoewi most importantly: thinking about what presentation suits each game best.
-
@dmnddst I had to write some stupid stuff to Resources.Load all of your options into memory when they're chosen, not at startup.
-
@dmnddst Most of the remaining 15 seconds is there to load in the outlines for the options.
-
Just finished Top of the Lake. Fuck. That's gonna stay with me for a while.
-
Anamanaguchi is playing in London in September! stargreen.com/anamanaguchi.html?affiliate=songkick
-
@infovore Whoaaaaaa, I did not notice that.
-
@infovore I got a ticket back when they went out through Songkick. But @patrickashe will be in the market for one, come payday.
-
@patrickashe @BRKeogh Still playing : Helix, Stickets, King of Dragon Pass, Toca Boca Hair Salon 2.
-
@edclef @patrickashe @BRKeogh Or, as much: enjoy the initial analysis-paralysis. Like Crusader Kings II, it enjoys ambiguity.
-
@edclef @patrickashe @BRKeogh If it told you exactly what things meant, it'd be a lot less interesting. Roleplay it some.
-
@BRKeogh @patrickashe It's so good.
-
@Han I've got a copy of this downstairs s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/000/560/550/0b380730babeaa8dd4ce1be3cb0865a4_large.gif?1367498031 (Anamanaguchi Airbrushed single)

Maybe make a game for the Boob Jam. theboobjam.tumblr.com/who
-
Man, typing the words "Boob Jam" is fun.
-
@Carachan1 Link to the NEED FOR MADNESS website is borked (missing "http://")

Really like the style of NEED FOR MADNESS rockpapershotgun.com/2013/07/31/i-feel-the-need-need-for-madness/

Whoa, Wikipedia finally deployed their visual editor.
-
@HilariousCow possibly line ending fuckery?
-
@HilariousCow (could be fixed with some ignore whitespace flags, if so)
-
@retroremakes I really like how every time you understand what the game is about it turns into a different game.
-
Politicans smiling at foodbanks wingsoverscotland.com/the-pride-of-britain/
-
Enjoying this button that isn't hooked up to anything, but nevertheless works.
-
(A "Refresh" button, when any interaction with the panel makes it refresh anyway)
-
@radiodario Oooh, I like that.
-
@retroremakes I have a text file of game ideas: I picked up the idea from @terrycavanagh. I've even crossed off a fair few.
-
@retroremakes I also have a notebook, but that's not so much for ideas as todo lists, planning and random notes.
-
@retroremakes ALSO I have a A3 jotter pad on my desk the whole time. Again, for todo lists and "thinking with a pen".
-
@retroremakes I am basically shit at ideas when my hands are on a computer.
