@mtrc having dealt with this stuff a little - the written CoC is the smallest, easiest part. what's hard is having processes to deal with stuff & be accountable. in many ways, it's good there wasn't a written CoC - if the organisers weren't properly on board, it'd be a lie anyway.

@KommanderKlobb I do think they should be loudly opposing it, yeah. It's useful to have an alternative spelt out clearly, so the whole thing isn't seen as unstoppable and necessary.

@KommanderKlobb And I reckon the main reason they don't is just because they're in two minds about the whole thing. Which isn't hopeful, should they suddenly win power before we're truly committed.

-
@bekokstover @derElbi @the_nomi @RottenHedgehog @LorenzoPilia @enibolas @BerlinGamez references (even obscure ones!) can be chill - there's something to that feeling of intertextuality? thinking of Spaced & even Ulysses. although both of these can be alienating for that reason.

ohhhh, the flat fee thing on Patreon is actually them moving to multiple transactions per month. so they're not skimming loads extra, they're just incurring a load of extra transaction fees. less venal, but still makes pledging small amounts less viable

it's weird, tho, because that (and the not letting you use Patreon money to repledge change, related) just decreases their competitive lock in. idk. is the pledge-and-then-cancel problem really that bad?

@LorenzoPilia tips: poking yourself in the eye is a bad time, but you get used to it? I need to learn to stop rubbing my eyes Sometimes my eyes get dry and uncomfortable. I don't have an answer beyond taking contacts out and putting glasses on. Eye drops are super temporary. You notice dry air
-
@LorenzoPilia All of which said, I like wearing contacts and do so an irregular 25% of the time.
-
@studioanisa Yeah! It's called a KVM switch. Not used one myself, but that's the thing
-
@studioanisa Or there's software that can do it (but that's only really a solution for the keyboard / mouse)
-
[poll] will the earphones i bought a few weeks ago work when I take them out of the washing machine i have just now realised i put them in?

@vruba @katierosepipkin @accidental__aRt oh, no, it's intentional, just i was intending a somewhat different output
-
@lorenschmidt @katierosepipkin ah, no, you're spot on - we do a bunch of things, but a lot of the sequences are slices done with, yeah, near and far plane clipping.
-
@lorenschmidt @katierosepipkin this is our tardy nanogenmo thing, so each slice is a page in the final output.
-
@lorenschmidt @katierosepipkin there is a sequence in it which is obtained by truncating the file at even intervals and rendering the result

-
@adurdin i love it, and also i love that Unity has made some small steps towards using newer versions of C#, so i might see it in a few years from now
-
@chrisamaphone slowly but surely we're getting there
-
@stml counterpoint: localhostgallery.nikonowicz.com/
-
@aeleitch @chrisamaphone oh, no, i love linq
-
@aeleitch @chrisamaphone i don't use the SQL notation, and there's a little bit of getting yr head round IEnumerables, but it's otherwise simple & straightforward & clean & I feel about it the way i do about underscore
-
@aeleitch @chrisamaphone here is literally the closest bit of LINQ in the file I am currently editing. it is super readable to me, and certainly much better than doing this with a loop or whatever?
-
@stml yeah, agreed! this is interesting kinda because it does actually work, when the expectation would be that it really wouldn't
-
@stml also Minecraft makes the "virtualness" actually tangible and interesting as a space, like a modern Second Life that actually has traction with the wider public
-
@aeleitch @chrisamaphone the IEnumerable bit is that candidatePieces is an IEnumerable<>, and is actually only executed/resolved when it's turned into a List or you look at the elements or whatever
-
any file with commas in is a csv file
-
@jbushnell there must be a novel without any commas
-
@aeleitch @chrisamaphone sometimes you can just pretend it's a list, sometimes you wanna call .ToList() on it at the end. but at least all of this is enforced by the type system, so normally it's just doing the thing the editor tells you to til all the red goes away
-
honestly, i think people trust the companies that hold their data too much right now. i'd rather have laws, regulation & safeguards built in. let's keep making jokes. @andybohm/940414766819844097
-
@andybohm i am for sure more worried about them! and yes, laws are limited in effectiveness, it's an ecosystem problem and complex to solve.
-
@andybohm but i think the distinction between small and big companies comes after "yes, {company} has all your data, and you are reliant on trusting them for it to stay private". which is knowledge that is spread quite well by jokes.
-
@andybohm these jokes & Netflix's misstep hurt Netflix, and hurt Google via reduced trust generally - but i think they help inform people in general

@FUZxxl - yes (well, adding a CoC & processes, yes) - with care! this is why it's good for the CoC committee to be separate from the main organizers & generally non-judgemental. focus on "keeping people safe", not being a judiciary. there's more resources i could link, if you like
-
@FUZxxl - generally, providing a safe space & well defined spaces gives more people the confidence to speak up & express themselves. if you have difficult content, that can usually be worked through, and flagged appropriately. it's easier to talk about stuff if the ground rules are clear
-
@FUZxxl (for example: generally talks at CCC won't have any sexual content. but i'd love to hear about sex toy security! it's easier to talk about that when the presenters and audience are clear about what content would be shown, than if everyone has to feel through themselves)
-
@FUZxxl generally, people think quite carefully about this stuff, and try to actually deal with tradeoffs in real life. it's not a series of wild hypotheticals! there are best practices here!
-
@compositeredfox what is bjork the of videogames? she's close enough to games to be the something of them...
-
@FUZxxl wait, is anyone saying that there shouldn't be personal judgement involved? you're never going to have an exhaustive set of rules, but the better the expectations & guidelines you've set, the easier it is for everybody.
-
@FUZxxl this is also coming from a place where people are currently extremely unlikely to report bad stuff to organizers. how can you up that reporting rate?
-
@FUZxxl here's the Geek Feminism template most tech CoCs are based on: geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_anti-harassment/Policy. note that it doesn't say that, and doesn't say that all violations will be punished (unless someone having a quiet word counts as punishment...)
-
@FUZxxl i hear you! and depending on the event, you want to consider how to put the messaging across & set expectations. but also: in the example of CCC, the harassment problem IS pretty bad? i know people who will no longer go for that reason.
-
@FUZxxl for an example outside of tech, look at the Good Night Out campaign in nightclubs in the UK
-
@FUZxxl agreed - and they explicitly have a section talking about that at the bottom: "Conferences in which sex, pornography, racism, etc. are on-topic"
-
@FUZxxl these are people i know irl. i can't speak for them, but i think they feel that: CCC doesn't take this seriously, as witnessed by resistance to putting in place a CoC & instituting procedures for dealing with instances.
-
@FUZxxl that seems like a good place to aim for, to me! of course, minor slips happen, but: "Presentations or similar events should not be stopped for one-time gaffes or minor problems, although a member of conference staff should speak to the presenter afterward." seems fair?
-

@superSGP this is a great talk, and i'm about to go back and read through again. i love types, but agree with most of the things you've said. but this helped me realise what i actually love is exploring an interface in an IDE before compile time, which types seem to be necessary for
-
@superSGP anyway, i mainly code in C# rn, and about to dive deep into doing a lot of JS (and learning Typescript!) so interested to see how that goes. I guess it's time to learn to love coding by exploring the current state in a REPL...
-
@superSGP the main thing i am wrapping my head round in JS rn is dealing with the async-yness & closurey-ness of it. promises & whatnot. which i think is also there for TS?

@casskhaw the end of month spending categorization has been been the right level of detail for me, too. and fixed monthly expenses go out of my old account, so it's just discretionary spending i have to think about.

i'm learning typescript! let's do a twitter thread about that. to start: any good things to read (other than the official docs)? where i'm at: this is for backend stuff, i do a lot of C#, i do some JS but don't really understand some stuff, i do not know any JS frameworks.

i am enjoying Gorogoa, but it feels kinda old-fashioned? tied to the idea of "finish your game", wringing all the possibilities out of a set of mechanics, novelty coming at a steady flow

@tTikitu mmm - i mean internal novelty, you know? the way a puzzle game slowly teaches you things, adds new mechanics, new depth to the ones you already know - even if those mechanics themselves needn't be notably novel to be good

@mcclure111 yeah, i agree with all of this, especially that that is the important question.
-
@mcclure111 and, like, what if they did tell them what that meant? what difference would it make? "oh, i'd have a one trillionth ownership of a company that uses sweatshop labour and threatens union organizers with violence, i guess i won't take out this pension scheme"
-
@dreamfeelx i was following a thought, but i entirely agree with what Andi was saying in the other thread - the point is that it's a system i can't opt out of, that does bad things with no mechanism for accountability
-
@dreamfeelx @gothdome *ever* is a bit strong, but yeah. yeah.
-
@mcclure111 yeah. and that's a very big if
-
notionally the answer is yes, but what if it's a work-administered pension investing in index-linked funds, investing in... etc etc. there's no real choice. i recommend & agree with @mcclure111's responses: @mcclure111/946786699664818177
-
@dreamfeelx @gothdome yeah, i definitely feel that dynamic, and agree it's fucked.

@Eastmad oh, nice
-
the secret is: people think they want a plucky hero succeeding despite the odds, but actually they want to think about closed-cycle ecologies
-
@GamingFTL Delicious In Dungeon does this explicitly! Non-Stop gives you enough information to figure it out for yourself.
-
@GamingFTL it is a manga about adventurers cooking the monsters
-
oh no i started designing this in my head as everybody knows, the world is a series of stacks of toroids, and things get heavier the deeper you go how would you even handle micro-gravity in turn based grid movement?
-
oh, now I want to play 0space again (teknopants.itch.io/0space)
-
@mcclure111 yeah, the toroids bit works. i was thinking about the central core - how to model inertia and the very different constraints on movement there
-
@mcclure111 i mean, probably actually you just make a system for smoothly varying gravity and then when it is broken at 0 you decide there's not a central level
-
@PlayReactive @SK_BARSK BOOOOO

question: what is the best "plug-in chip" in N:A? answer: the one that means you pick up things automatically
-
obviously it's pointless to speculate what games would be like without the particular weird commercial pressures and conventions that shaped them. because that's like... 75% of game design. but also...
-
down with games with collectible systems gating basic things that make the game more pleasurable to play
-
I'm looking at you, Gravity Rush's pink gems/"Gauge Usage" (it is a game about hanging in the air and improbably falling in the wrong direction. this... unlocks the ability to do this for long enough to be satisfying?)
-
@jwaaaap yeah, i think there's definitely a "burdened" rule that plugs in pretty easily. and the low-grav corridors you start jumping multiple tiles per turn
-
@jwaaaap reminded of the generation ship book where they all used throwing knives, until some genius decided to make a really long knife (ie, a sword)
-
@jwaaaap I've not read Hothouse, or much Aldiss, actually. Non-Stop is good! Not necessary, but a fun time. A halfway house between, like, an Iain Banks and something real pulpy & 60s.
