i played a campaign yesterday and it was interesting how little i cared about seeing opponents play out their turns, or planning ahead for a new turn - instead, it was all about getting out of *this* sticky situation
-
further thoughts: it's a masterpiece, but i don't love it. given a choice between the tight, measured, balanced thing & the wild oh wow oh what oh, hah! thing, they went for the balanced thing every time.
-
this could be felt most strongly in the choice of what battles to pick. there was rarely anything that drew me in, compelled me to see what was what. but the single turn loop of "he's webbed, but i need him *here* to kill this one... oh, if i..." - top quality Interesting Choices

sudden idea to make a tarot card app. golden thread is good! but the illustrations don't speak to me, and it has so much stuff you have to get through to just draw a card. and i'd love to really nail the UX of such an intimate thing. idk. do people think this is a good idea?

-
@netgal_emi interesting! I am much less interested in recording draws over time (definitely as a core thing). what information would you record with the card?
-
@netgal_emi page per week - there's something nice about having time marked off like that, although it might not fit to phone screens so easily. but yeah! interesting.
-
@netgal_emi yeah, i was just thinking about the terrifying nature of an infinite scroll list of all your days. a week per page feels much more humane, somehow.
-
@xxvi_xxxviii I was thinking of this as a proper commercial project yeah - and yes, good features! maybe adjustable proportion of reversed cards - it doesn't quite make sense, but about 30% feels right, somehow?
-
@Coleo_Kin i do not miss university air conditioning
-
@xxvi_xxxviii mmm. i do know what you mean. and it kind of exposes the weirdness at the whole idea of a tarot card app.
-
@xxvi_xxxviii not-speaking-to? do you mean it's insistence on a digital feel with smooth vectors & little skeuomorphism?
-
@xxvi_xxxviii ah, i see. it's interesting (having just launched it again) how you can see that the design came from designing a deck first, then oh! this could be an app.
-
@xxvi_xxxviii which is a fine way to do it, but it doesn't lend itself to questioning what it means to make a tarot card app. (though note all the bits about, oh, you could use a physical deck instead)
-
@metasynthie oh, nice. yeah, i feel like shuffling and holding on your question and slowing down is vital. there's not enough people exploring slow rituals in tech.

-
@chrisamaphone @aeleitch the place it gets hard is coordinating with data files where there's no concept of types (but maybe the answer is "don't use them, then")
-
@chrisamaphone @aeleitch or, cheaper fix for this case, the import process should throw visible errors if a reference is missing? but this gets close to backseat driving
-
@chrisamaphone @mcclure111 @aeleitch yep! current (Typescript) project, we serialise to JSON for user data, and when we pull it out it's set up as an object with the right types & errors if the types are incompatible
-
@chrisamaphone @mcclure111 @aeleitch but we also load data files from csv (which come from google sheets our very much non-technical writers work in). maybe the same approach will work there? idk, not looked into that part of the project yet
-
@mcclure111 @chrisamaphone @aeleitch i think prepending "export default" to a JSON file would be enough to turn it into a Typescript module... but honestly i'm not sure there's that much benefit to doing it then rather than when the code is loaded/tests are run etc?
-
@mcclure111 @chrisamaphone @aeleitch i mean, actually it comes down to workflow - do you recompile to update data files, or run a script, or just replace them and run tests? depends on how tied the cadence is of editing data files versus modifying code.
-
RT @molleindustria: I made a city-building game that you play on/with my dog
-
what a good tweet this was @everyboolean/797828443589091328
-
@lazerwalker @mcclure111 @chrisamaphone @aeleitch mm, good point - though if you're parsing data files at compile time, i reckon you're just gonna update the whole thing (code & data) at once. or, the other way to look at it is that your data has become code.
-
@mcclure111 @lazerwalker @chrisamaphone @aeleitch yeah - i think our data files are type-checked when the application loads, not when tests hit them (if they're not, they should be). which is not quite at compile, but good enough, imo

got a lot of thoughts about the final segment of the new Cool Ghosts episode youtu.be/U0MSxdhnqSg?t=19m16s
-
recently i attempted to play Nier : Automata. people i like had praised how innovate it was, had loved the characters, it was full of goofy fun stuff & nice rhythmic combat.
-
i don't play many big videogames, and mainly i was like, oh. there's a open world, there's collectibles, there's endless thingys to fight, there's side quests, there's all this stuff that you need to put in when you're making a videogame like this
-
and i liked a lot of that stuff! and the game couldn't have existed without that - it was clever solutions to make that stuff feel great. and i did love the characters. but. mainly it was just really long. and i put it on easy and burnt through it as fast as i could.
-
i like seeing all the ways you can use a computer to do things that don't help you achieve a task. i like games. but i don't think i really like videogames all that much.
-
@stephen__clark yeah, i definitely think the game couldn't have worked the way it did if it wasn't built on that triple A scaffolding.

Okay, so. I was making toast, and then I started wondering - why is there a thing about scraping burnt bits into the sink? That's definitely the script I have, but why not into the bin?
-
the sink is larger, so catches more burnt bits? the sink feels cleaner than the bin? is this somehow a Britishism?
-
I checked Twitter : twitter.com/search?q=%22burnt%20bits%20into%20the%20sink%22&s=09 so it's not just me ("burnt bits into the bin" has fewer results)
-
I didn't burn this toast, btw.
-
@timbusuttil i think that makes unwarranted assumptions about kitchen layout
-
@hollygramazio oooh, good question. we don't have one now, but as a kid I'd say I'd probably just scrape into the tub and it'd be extra annoying to clean up after?
-
@kimadactl but burnt toast isn't actually hot - also see Holly's point about the plastic basins in UK sinks

the UX of buying a book on Amazon is weirdly bad? at least the way I do it
-
- search for book title on Google - click Amazon .com link - look at product page - change .com to .co.uk in URL - look at product page, slightly different this time, decide, yes, I wanna buy this
-
- leave the book in my Amazon basket for a month or so, until there's something I need to buy urgently - realize the book has changed price, so there's a new cheaper seller, re-add the book - oh god, that whole checkout flow, i'm not even gonna try to thread it - book!
-
there's probably an easier way to do it
-
@PeteOlympian who is your online bookseller of choice?
-
@PeteOlympian yeah - just checked the publisher's site, it's $36 to get it & shipped to the UK :< but using the clues on the Amazon 3rd party seller listing, looks like I could get it on Wordery instead
-
@bambam_alt @Tweet_Delete i can go in and block it manually, if that'd help?
-
@JDespland well. yes. often? but also the dynamics are different, and often better. chunky rev-share agreements are common, for instance, and that fundamentally changes the relationship
-
@JDespland in midboss's case, it seems like the dynamics are different in a bad way - the informal context & situatedness in an outside community increased the potential for abuse
-

-

-
@lazerwalker yeah, i guess my haziness is about null vs undefined vs void vs a union with a ... thingy? which has a name? but whose value is not used?
-
@lazerwalker (also, i guess, vs smth like { isValid : boolean, value ?: Something }, but that seems super fussy for internal stuff)
-
@lazerwalker i can forgive a lot for finally (if you set the compiler flag) being in a language where null is only a valid option if you explicitly said it should be
