@mcclure111 @4xisblack I am pretty sure childCount and GetChild() and the foreach transform stuff hits the C++ layer in the same way - if you wanna cache the list you can just construct it yourself manually, bypassing the fake IEnumerable
-
@mcclure111 @4xisblack yeah, something like for(int i =0; i<transform.childCount;i++){ list.Append(transform.GetChild(i)); } although as @LordNed says, if you for loop backwards you should be able to use this to delete in one pass without making a list separately

@4xisblack @mcclure111 @LordNed the other one that is a weird Unity hack is that after being destroyed, Unity Objects are not actually null, but have equality overridden so they will return true when compared to null. this matters because you can't use the null coalescing operator on them.

continuing on to RULES... these gorgeous, inspiring diagrams (by Ruohong Wu) and @pippinbarr's v r 3

v r 3 especially has been great for hearing kids and adults have in depth conversations about their favourite water, the qualities they like, that that one at the back is way too expensive at $20 (you can play it at home: pippinbarr.com/2017/03/29/v-r-3/)

it's really sweet & I'm really happy with how it works within the flow of an exhibition but also lets people actually make something, and see the process by which that becomes a game, and then shown in one of our beautiful & professional-looking cabinets.

@lorenschmidt recent, maybe relevant example: finding coins in Minit. there are 17(?) in total, the game tells you this, each is a well hinted puzzle in the world, and rare enough, unique enough and contextually supported enough I never felt any urge to rub up against the rocks.
-
@lorenschmidt I mean, all this is based on a deep & developed sense of trust & communication with the design. Everything hinted, a setup & payoff, everything comfortably possible, the human hand hiding each secret within a setup that'll vary each time.

@lorenschmidt A parallel : I'm stuck on a puzzle in The Flames (Puzzlescript game). I have three barrels, I need two later, so I know I need to consume one in an interesting way (not, of course, leave it aside, or burn it early)

@JamesWallis i think (looking at the page) that it's morally fine? they're not claiming to have invented Jenga or the base rules they're building on, and they're not undercutting Jenga, or selling to people who'd otherwise buy Jenga (in fact, this'll lead to more people buying Jenga)
-
@JamesWallis (it'd be better if they explicitly gave credit to Jenga, but i can easily imagine the legal advice that would lead to them not doing that)
-
@JamesWallis I think creating a new stacking game would make this game worse. But yeah, I'm not a huge fan of them manufacturing their own clone - ideally they'd resell actual Jenga, bundled with their rules, but as you say, KS rules prohibit that.

@jonbro @ragzouken Yeah, using Typescript (on the server end, so the pipeline is easier) and it's a real nice language, and familiar from C#.

make art that generates outputs that video compression algorithms can't handle
-
as anyone has tried this knows: - it's great because it means that the real thing is necessary, not a fixed sample of the possible outputs - it's a huge pain in the arse because no-one can see it without actually running the thing/going somewhere where it's running

i stan hard for realtime generative work, but also maybe... maybe it's possible there is interesting work which takes more than 16ms per frame to render?

when i was at university, i did a few days work taking pictures for a company that sold pictures of marathon runners. they did it based on taking photos at specific points and using timestamps, but i think they were moving to image recognition on bibs (as here) @conniechan/988982637019717633
-
one fun bit was that they wanted to get the photos up as quick as possible - but uploading them from site would be too slow, so they overnighted the SD cards back to London and processed them there. i guess outsourcing the uploading as well as the photo taking solves that issue.
-
@tonywalsh this is for people developing stuff that streamers can add to their channel to incentivise micro-payments, not for people who make the games that streamers stream themselves playing. also, yeah, 20% sounds fine?

-
two tiny notes: -this leaves out the many situations where you make a living making videogames that end up not making a profit being sold to actual players -there's a bit in this which maybe starts to explain why I'm fine with the word "content"
-
also, I then immediately read this, which is an amazing cartoonist on the fringes of games culture talking about games in an interesting and thoughtful way medium.com/mammon-machine-zeal/this-comic-was-funded-through-patreon-medium-under-the-zeal-project-1e615cb77f43

blog posts that are about a different industry than the games industry, but could probably apply to the games industry too (but seriously, where is this kind of writing within games?) avatalksabouttheatre.wordpress.com/2018/04/25/thoughts-on-the-writer-and-this-dang-industry/
-
@radiatoryang oh, I so disagree! this post goes off for a few paragraphs ragging on the theatre audience, and tbh I'd much rather have the games audience than the theatre one. games culture, maybe not so much... but I definitely don't want to escape into making stuff only for posh people.
-
@radiatoryang and amaze is great (hey, I just landed in Berlin!), and also shoutouts to Feral Vector, Playful Arts, Screenshake (RIP), etc... but as @thecatamites laid out in yesterday's blog post, indie games basically sell to the same people that games in general did before they came along.
-
@radiatoryang not that any of this should be taken to be ragging on creating new audiences, new ways to talking to them, new conversations in games...
