  64. @andypiper hi, sorry to bother you. I run Cheap Bots, Done Quick, a major site for artistic twitterbot making. It's API access has been suspended - do you know if there's anyone I can talk to about this?
  65. …in reply to @gaymothaunt

  69. …in reply to @v21

  73. …in reply to @v21
@ojahnn the more detailed response was that people were using it for hashtag spam, which is actually a fair cop - I have not been as good at policing it for spambots as I should be.

  76. …in reply to @martinpi
@martinpi ahhh! this is wonderful news.
  77. …in reply to @JennSandercock
@JennSandercock to get a bit theoretical on it... there's two stages to backing a KS project. stage 1 is "oh, this is cool!". stage 2 is figuring out if it is the thing you thought/details/if you can afford it/what rewards you want to get/whatever.
  78. …in reply to @v21
@JennSandercock Once people have passed stage 1, they're motivated enough to dig in for the details. But you've got to make those immediate hooks as obvious as possible.
  79. …in reply to @v21
@JennSandercock I am sure I am telling you stuff you already know, though!

  106. …in reply to @Nifflas
@Nifflas so - that sucks, and i'm sorry this is the case for you. people are all different and need different things, so i don't want to force anyone in particular to do particular things - but i do think the indie community would be stronger if there was a better tradition of critique.
  107. …in reply to @v21
@Nifflas so many designers playing games and having interesting thoughts about them - but then not saying anything because it's rude & risky to say not-positive things about a small developer's work. we'd be better off if we were having those conversations, imo.
  108. …in reply to @mtrc
@mtrc @Nifflas oh, god, yeah, it's true, please save me from "honest critique" that's modelled on edgy personas like Zero Punctuation etc.
  109. …in reply to @Nifflas
@Nifflas yeah - the flipside of the culture of "crits" (at art/design/architecture schools, as in the original tweet) is that they can be really bruising things to go through week after week. i'm sure there's plenty of people who've dropped out because they can't really deal.

  292. …in reply to @v21
and it feels a bit like cheating, but that's on purpose - CBDQ is focused on being approachable, but where I could enable this kind of wildness, I did. So the Tracery field can accept (iirc) 10 MB of text, more than you could ever write by hand.

  294. …in reply to @v21
So the editor is the JSON representation, rather than the visual editor (I was absolutely not going to have two possible editors). So the reply feature hooks into the Tracery field & is also in a JSON format.

so then they invented the bingo format, with a 5x5 grid of challenges - each run has to all the challenges on a row or a column. the first version was entirely random - but sometimes one row/column would be just way easier.

they did fixed runs, then someone made an irc bot to give random challenges (with a challenge would come up, then everyone would run at the same time - this was pre-streaming days). that was fun, but people kept rerolling the challenges & it was a pain in the arse.

now they scrape the data that runners put up, to extract analytics about what challenges people run for. and there's loads of friendly ribbing about "dirty blankers" who don't put up their metadata for runs.

so they started weighting difficulty of different challenges, then using magic squares to distribute the challenges. and now the modern bingo backend takes into account that some synergise better with others, to try to create a balanced board of interesting challenges.

so fascinating - the iterative interplay between game design, community practices, the text of the game, learnings about runs & skips & tricks...

the current runner has been in the community for 12 years - he's old school enough his handle is "runner guy" (people calling him RG). he's the one making the spreadsheets of challenges for balancing purposes. some of the dudes on the couch are dirty blankers.
