this version in a scanned PDF, the other version a photograph of an old edition, one someone thoughtfully typed up for a blog post in 2008 (, one only available as a soundcloud reading)
  16. something about reading a poem online & then searching again a d seeing a different version, these lines different, punctuation, capitalization, line breaks different
  17. …in reply to @v21
obviously text has varied between editions before (and this is often the source of the changes). and people have always copied by hand, photocopied etc. but now all of these versions are so much more immediately to hand, the handwriting as elevated as the hot lead
  18. …in reply to @v21

  46. …in reply to @ZakSmithSabbath
@ZakSmithSabbath ah, i don't really care if it's a radical idea as much as the reasoning behind why it might work, the way it intersects with the design of the game & workload for creators. (personally i'm well served by the indie one-shot games somewhat dismissed in the thread)
  47. …in reply to @v21
@ZakSmithSabbath it is occasionally a nice thing to dip into a discipline adjacent to yours, but it does mean you never have the full context, or the full set of stakes

  52. …in reply to @tambourine
@tambourine less gentle is very okay with me - but the nice thing was the mainly human-scale stakes & the harshness of the world poking through the dainty tablecloths & cups of tea.

@chrisamaphone my response to this would be that "story" transcends the low/high division (you could easily make a case that narrative is stronger within low art, thinking of it).
  68. …in reply to @v21
@chrisamaphone but there's something I've been trying to put my finger on for ages... about "content", refreshing feeds, the flattening effect of the lack of context (but simultaneously the overwhelming effect of too much context)

@studioanisa yeahhhh I do. solutions I try: - don't tell people - rope other people in (thus committing yourself to the project) - give yourself a fixed amount of time to do the thing & only do the thing (combines well with other options)
  114. …in reply to @v21
@studioanisa it sucks because other people often have good ideas! or can provide other support! but this effect is lessened if you only tell people about it once you've got a rhythm going
  115. …in reply to @v21
@studioanisa I also try to work on stuff where you can release bits repeatedly, and then choose to make more if you like. Love making stuff, hate feeling beholden to "a project".

@polclarissou I have always said & oscillate around taking seriously : games is the type of interactive art it's easiest to get paid for. I like getting paid, I like making interactive art, so I make games.
  117. …in reply to @v21
@polclarissou but also there are good people working on keeping clear a tiny space within games that isn't trash. sometimes it's hard to find it, and it isn't really big enough to live in, but it's there, and I like to think it's getting bigger.
  118. …in reply to @polclarissou
@polclarissou hm. I must say, after releasing my first major commercial project, I did feel a strong desire to never do that again. On the other hand, I was paying rent, developing videogames, for a good number of years before that seemed like an imminent possibility.

  137. this Aliens : CM ini file bug is the kind of glorious story that gives everyone the chance to confirm whatever strong feelings they had about game development they had before they heard it.
  138. …in reply to @v21
(backstory : a single character typo in an ini file for Aliens: Colonial Marines meant that a lot of the AI behaviours for the Alien never triggered. This was recently discovered by a modder, years after release)
  139. …in reply to @v21
is the root cause: -lazy devs -not verifying configuration files -a lack of automated testing -tiredness caused by crunch -a lack of slack in the schedule -under-resourcing of QA -brought on by a strategic choice to use Unreal -that making videogames is just very difficult

  142. …in reply to @KennyAmongus
@KennyAmongus probably never worked properly/consistently/within the game proper (as opposed to test bits when developing the AI systems in isolation). and probably happened at a time when the build was super thrashy/breaking all the time. idk! i'm also projecting.
  143. …in reply to @PrevMollrow
@MollRow yeah, i find the whole thing very understandable, although i can see why it's caught people's attention. sucks that it's framed as "fixing the game", though.
  144. …in reply to @lorenschmidt
@lorenschmidt this is such a useful technique, but the programming worm has gotten into bits of my brain and makes me hate all floating bits of mutable state that aren't properly encapsulated, which makes this then become a heavy-weight way to do things.
  145. …in reply to @lorenschmidt
@lorenschmidt mmm - i only really find this a problem with reasonably small arrays. and the worm's problem is that either the state is kept within the random generator (in which case, i have to think about sequencing of calling it), or it's kept elsewhere & has to be passed everywhere.
  146. …in reply to @v21
the bit that's actually annoying is the bit where people keep saying fixing this "fixed an awful game". the game was objectively bad before, now it is all fine. how silly of the devs not to have found this themselves! if only they knew a single character was all it took.
