this version in a scanned PDF, the other version a photograph of an old edition, one someone thoughtfully typed up for a blog post in 2008 (, one only available as a soundcloud reading)
-
something about reading a poem online & then searching again a d seeing a different version, these lines different, punctuation, capitalization, line breaks different
-
obviously text has varied between editions before (and this is often the source of the changes). and people have always copied by hand, photocopied etc. but now all of these versions are so much more immediately to hand, the handwriting as elevated as the hot lead
-
and see text start to return to being a thing modified in reproduction, a common heritage of leaky archives, a vernacular transmission where for a while we had definitive editions

if you're into TTRPGs, then this is an interesting thread about better ways to make them. if you're interested in game design, it's a great example of how business models and game design are interconnected in really interesting ways. @machineiv/1014319417461575680

@ZakSmithSabbath ah, i don't really care if it's a radical idea as much as the reasoning behind why it might work, the way it intersects with the design of the game & workload for creators. (personally i'm well served by the indie one-shot games somewhat dismissed in the thread)
-
@ZakSmithSabbath it is occasionally a nice thing to dip into a discipline adjacent to yours, but it does mean you never have the full context, or the full set of stakes

@chrisamaphone my response to this would be that "story" transcends the low/high division (you could easily make a case that narrative is stronger within low art, thinking of it).
-
@chrisamaphone but there's something I've been trying to put my finger on for ages... about "content", refreshing feeds, the flattening effect of the lack of context (but simultaneously the overwhelming effect of too much context)

@studioanisa yeahhhh I do. solutions I try: - don't tell people - rope other people in (thus committing yourself to the project) - give yourself a fixed amount of time to do the thing & only do the thing (combines well with other options)
-
@studioanisa it sucks because other people often have good ideas! or can provide other support! but this effect is lessened if you only tell people about it once you've got a rhythm going
-
@studioanisa I also try to work on stuff where you can release bits repeatedly, and then choose to make more if you like. Love making stuff, hate feeling beholden to "a project".
-
@polclarissou I have always said & oscillate around taking seriously : games is the type of interactive art it's easiest to get paid for. I like getting paid, I like making interactive art, so I make games.
-
@polclarissou but also there are good people working on keeping clear a tiny space within games that isn't trash. sometimes it's hard to find it, and it isn't really big enough to live in, but it's there, and I like to think it's getting bigger.
-
@polclarissou hm. I must say, after releasing my first major commercial project, I did feel a strong desire to never do that again. On the other hand, I was paying rent, developing videogames, for a good number of years before that seemed like an imminent possibility.

this Aliens : CM ini file bug is the kind of glorious story that gives everyone the chance to confirm whatever strong feelings they had about game development they had before they heard it.
-
(backstory : a single character typo in an ini file for Aliens: Colonial Marines meant that a lot of the AI behaviours for the Alien never triggered. This was recently discovered by a modder, years after release)
-
is the root cause: -lazy devs -not verifying configuration files -a lack of automated testing -tiredness caused by crunch -a lack of slack in the schedule -under-resourcing of QA -brought on by a strategic choice to use Unreal -that making videogames is just very difficult
-
@FinalBullet mine is fine! but also I don't think I have often hated my toasters.
-
@PistachioRoux @jonbro perfect
-
@KennyAmongus probably never worked properly/consistently/within the game proper (as opposed to test bits when developing the AI systems in isolation). and probably happened at a time when the build was super thrashy/breaking all the time. idk! i'm also projecting.
-
@MollRow yeah, i find the whole thing very understandable, although i can see why it's caught people's attention. sucks that it's framed as "fixing the game", though.
-
@lorenschmidt this is such a useful technique, but the programming worm has gotten into bits of my brain and makes me hate all floating bits of mutable state that aren't properly encapsulated, which makes this then become a heavy-weight way to do things.
-
@lorenschmidt mmm - i only really find this a problem with reasonably small arrays. and the worm's problem is that either the state is kept within the random generator (in which case, i have to think about sequencing of calling it), or it's kept elsewhere & has to be passed everywhere.
-
the bit that's actually annoying is the bit where people keep saying fixing this "fixed an awful game". the game was objectively bad before, now it is all fine. how silly of the devs not to have found this themselves! if only they knew a single character was all it took.
-
@Jam_sponge oooh, can I get a cheeky bonus shoutout? I'm sweaty and anxious!
-
RT @hobomundas: whats happening
-
thinking further on this: we *just* shipped a game where it would be possible to break it by typoing something in a spreadsheet. there are tests, but there are ways this stuff could get round them. (until we're woken up by errors - this is a server-based game)
-
would it be nice to make the tests bulletproof? yes. would it be a good use of time? probably! did we find time in the schedule to do it? no.
-
@ldreamfeel i assume it either never worked except for one ai coder, or it broke when a load of other stuff changed... or lots of possible scenarios. maybe it worked in the editor, but never in proper builds? etc etc

@tripofmice text STOP to the twitter shortcode/number. unassociates the number and frees it up for a new account. or, since you're in the states, does Google Voice still exist? I know people used that for numbers before.
-
@tripofmice ah, shame. I think I might have seen this before? final, last ditch solution: go to a shop & get a PAYG sim card. they're basically free over here.
-
is there a word for the way that individuals within a system of selection pressures tend to take on the values of that selective pressure as their own?

not that evolution can have values, or want things, of course. but it can select for things & that can form tendencies for particular desires (dislike: dying, like: fucking) in the organisms resulting

-
@lauraehall yeah, I think staffing is always the biggest cost. I guess there's also a tradeoff in terms of audience investment here - like, you can use less staff if the players have done prep & are more committed.
-
@lauraehall and in turn, you can make the experience more actually interactive/co-authored by players. different thing, maybe...
-
@lauraehall but I think there'll be an end to stuff getting bigger and more spectacular. each time, the risk increases & expectations increase - look at the way that triple-A narrative games are getting rarer.

@asponge this makes me very happy (and reassured that you find this hard - recently wrote a 3000 word thing & it was hard & bad & rewarding when I managed to actually get into it...)

@asponge although, tbh, I'd rather read you writing about outdoor swimming than videogames. but glad either way.

@asponge ALSO I swam in a lake on Friday and was very happy to go past a coot as it was diving.

@asponge I didn't get any pictures! but it was at Sloterplas in Amsterdam - actually a fake beach there, which was a shame - would be nicer to be a wild tucked away corner.

@cassiemcquater it feels like there's a connection to Patrick LeMieux's analysis of Super Mario Clouds here - like, the disinterest in the artworld in the material construction of a thing versus what it represents. or more generally a prizing of artefacts over processes
-
@cassiemcquater obv there's a long long history of people doing stuff with these ideas. but for me the .psds etc are an artefact that embodies a process... but actually what people care about are the artefacts. i dunno.
-
@cassiemcquater also mainly what you sell when you sell art on the blockchain is the novelty of buying art on the blockchain.

Twitter is introducing new limits for apps & a submission step between creating an app and being able to use it - I'm on top of this for CBDQ, and don't currently expect any disruption. @TwitterAPI/1021817816134156288
-
@botwikidotorg I'm applying for the increased rate limit - should be okay, though!
-
@GalaxyKate more like (but thanks)
-
@0xCAFEBEEF you can put multiple bot accounts under a single app! that part isn't so terrible.
-
@0xCAFEBEEF (or, each bot account can register it's own app, and each will have a limit of 10 apps. you'd have to wait for Twitter permission for each bot that way, tho)
-
@mcclure111 this limit I read is there to crack down on spam - the streaming API shutdown I read as to drive people to paid services & prevent Cambridge Analytica style analysis of tweets.
-
@0xCAFEBEEF agreed, and it kills stupid fun project energy to have to get approval for each app (& has a big ol' chilling effect)
-
@dekisu hah, no worries! and these are good points, too! you might be right about mass analysis - had seen some wording in Twitter stuff about user data retained, accessed etc that prompted the CA stuff.

@Ludonaut it's a good idea (someone made a sketchy port at one time, without saying anything to me). but I don't think I care enough about Mastodon to support it, personally - it'd basically be a new site (w a lot of the same code).

@Ludonaut If someone wants to do it, I'd be happy to support... but I don't have the headspace to lead.
-
@mtrc I'm writing a chapter on bots right now, and some of my examples will be dead by the time it goes to the printers.
-
@mtrc Assuming Twitter gives me permission for the higher rate of POST requests, which I am expecting will be okay, yes!
-
@lizardengland @mtrc yep, all the CBDQ bots run through a single "Twitter app". which, yes, sends more than 300 tweets every 3 hours, so it'll need extra approval.
