@netgal_emi the tiny snobbish game designer in me wants to say that actually it shows bad design - ideally all your fixes should be smooth and seamless and leave the holodeck walls invisible
  11. …in reply to @netgal_emi
@netgal_emi right, I agree! and I loved your recent post on yr gacha game. but that an (expensive, painful, probably doomed) way of solving the problem, and it is the Correct answer according to the values present in the game design traditions I was surrounded by when I became a designer.

@chrisamaphone ooof! this is a very good point & one i am guilty of. thank you for this thread!
  39. …in reply to @chrisamaphone
@chrisamaphone mmm - for CBDQ, i deliberately let difficult features be confusing & hidden. but i guess it's important that you can complete a lot of satisfying bots without those high level features. and also it's a tradeoff - i tried to choose making the basic stuff approachable.
  40. …in reply to @chrisamaphone
@chrisamaphone it's interesting thinking back to the very start - i released a host your own Tracerybot project at about the same time, intended as a escape hatch for people who wanted to go beyond CBDQ. it never saw much use...

@lorenschmidt i put it down to "documentation is hard"...
  42. …in reply to @lorenschmidt
@lorenschmidt @spry_chicken so, to be a bit less glib: the docs team manages the API, engine, assorted plugins & extensions. and does docs, tutorials, youtube videos & maybe also live training? and has that x however many versions. and... has company bullshit, tooling & standards to deal with. so: big task.
  43. …in reply to @v21
@lorenschmidt @spry_chicken of course, big task, bigger company. and this stuff is pretty basic, and has been neglected for so long. the right thing is simple, getting there is hard...
  44. …in reply to @lorenschmidt
@lorenschmidt @spry_chicken i would also assume this! which is fucked generally for normal reasons of valuing soft-skills/gendered work etc... but especially because Unity lives or dies by it's docs.
  45. …in reply to @lorenschmidt
@lorenschmidt @spry_chicken yeah, good point. though i would also guess Unity is only at 60-70% gamedev use by this point... still, though, even with training and paid support, you're still likely to be wrestling with Transform.LookAt with mainly the docs & SO to guide you...

  99. …in reply to @v21
there's a substantial part of me that wants to sack off this trip, this commission, all the friends i'm gonna see, and just spend three weeks sitting on the sofa drinking cups of tea with the cat on my lap instead.

  102. …in reply to @v21
    @__Tyu here is the other
  103. …in reply to @hoskingc
@hoskingc yep - I think urinals give (for reasonably obvious reasons) a heightened sense of personal space, so it's more noticeable there. it's also an environment where people are generally not with others, so patterns are clearer.
  104. …in reply to @v21
@hoskingc but then the train on the way in had a perfectly even pattern of every other seat filled, which made me compare.
  105. …in reply to @LiaSae
    @LiaSae really enjoying this thread!
  106. I've been listening to some Friends At The Table recently, and I like the idea (which is surely true) that there are people looking at slideshows of runway shows in order to get the references when folks describe the next impossible outfit someone is wearing.

  108. plane movie report: Ocean's 8 : good fun, although probably not as much fun as doing costume design for it Zootopia : i turned this off once the somewhat tedious beats of the story started to come through. some amazing rendering/animation, you can really taste the money
  109. …in reply to @v21
The Witches: i did not know this existed (tho I'd read the Roald Dahl book). what an amazing film. who is this for? creepy Jim Henson puppetry, Anjelica Houston vamping around, Rowan Atkinson doing Fawlty Towers, and the kid's arc is "actually it's fine to be turned into a mouse"
  110. …in reply to @v21
Young Frankenstein : this was a good idea, but standards have increased since this was made. I think? though there's a beautiful bit of physical comedy when Gene Wilder stabs himself in the leg at the start.
  111. …in reply to @mink_ette
@mink_ette it's _so_ tacked on. i wouldn't be surprised if they added that on after test audiences complained
  112. …in reply to @v21
here is the poster, and here is a still that accurately captures the feeling of the film
  113. …in reply to @qDot
@qDot I mean, are they really there for the plot, though? (the reason I watched it at all was the thing about how earbuds work in rabbit ears... that kinda stuff was great, but then the whole thing doesn't work on a slightly larger scale, and thoughtful small stuff makes you expect it)
  114. …in reply to @MagInTheSmoke
@MagInTheSmoke that's probably fair! I was in distracted plane-movie mode, which lowers your patience for some stuff & raises it for others
  115. …in reply to @v21
@MagInTheSmoke but also! I did start hitting the point where the anti-racism bit hit the unfortunate setup where different animals have denonstratably different characteristics, and it was clearly just gonna clash more.

  123. CBDQ seems to be having issues - the website is fine, but bots seem to be struggling. Looking into it now!
  124. …in reply to @v21
Ah - twittercommunity.com/t/new-post-endpoint-rate-limit-enforcement-begins-today/115355 will be it. I thought I'd done the necessary bureaucracy to get by the rate limits, but it seems like I missed a step. Done now, will update as I get news. Might be a few days disruption to service - very sorry about this.
  125. …in reply to @v21

@BooDooPerson @DavidLublin @TVFaceBot @GlitchTVBot the symptom of this was error 185 "User is over daily status update limit."
  127. …in reply to @GalaxyKate

  128. …in reply to @jstsgs
@jstsgs @GalaxyKate i usually have to provide a phone number... but then they're usually okay.
  129. …in reply to @jstsgs
@jstsgs @GalaxyKate i think it's fine on a policy basis, but obviously there's different (and shifting) stuff set up to catch spammers, and normal CBDQ behaviour looks a lot like spam...
  130. …in reply to @bitpixi
@bitpixi this sounds like a bad scene. it feels like they're not really pulling their weight in this, which is honestly a more fundamental problem.
  131. …in reply to @v21
@bitpixi i get not being comfy about a partner flirting with others, it can hit that triggering jealousy spot & you can do okay without it (like, you can communicate openly, be happy someone is having a good time with others & still not like hearing details).
  132. …in reply to @v21
@bitpixi but the problems here seem not related to poly stuff, but to this partner just wanting convenience/the old status quo/not putting energy into actively maintaining the relationship. when you're in that dynamic, you talking to new people really is genuinely threatening!
  133. …in reply to @bitpixi
@bitpixi they sound really nice. i am leery of dating both halves of a couple/that dynamic, but maybe that's just me being conservative...

  146. …in reply to @SimonParkin
@SimonParkin i like this fizzing sense of static, the deep context that each tweet needs to be understood & also the lack of context each tweet presents with. a flattening of importance; all of this is the same! it's one of my favourite things about making bots - more! more! more!
