RT @InstrumentBot: an instrument made out of cleavers and two hundred canaries
-
@deer_ful me too, but... I am in LA.
-
I just got on the Southwest Chief, a train heading from Los Angeles to Chicago, where I'm going to transfer onto another train and head on to New York, finally arriving 3 days from now, at 6pm.
-
the train is full, and I wish it wasn't. I am trying very hard to not think about the sensation of the old woman next to me's fleece sleeve brushing gently against my arm.
-
despite that, I am excited for this trip. gonna see some ~biomes~ ooh, we're moving!
-
@artcollisions I have wanted to do this trip for a while now, very glad it's worked out
-
the view right now is passing a Home Depot in the dark, but here's a view as @katbamkapow was driving me to Union Station
-
@everestpipkin good luck!!
-
@katbamkapow @notquitereal @everestpipkin I did not properly clock this section when I played it before, and aahhhhh, what feelings.
-
@katbamkapow I still think that it's weird they *started* with Satan as the (kinda) big bad. give yourself somewhere to go!

@john_brindle my feeling is that you might well benefit from seeing a doctor, getting an ADHD diagnosis, and getting a prescription for a stimulant. and/or quitting caffeine.

@john_brindle you have my sympathy, though. and encouragement that you really are more than your work.
-
@TheNazzaro wait, fuck, I forgot you lived there... 😭
-
@TheNazzaro to be fair, I was in Irvine pretty much the whole time I was here (other than visiting Culver City today)
-
it is 3:36am and the woman sitting next to me is still shifting in her seat or scratching herself (and thus nudging me) approximately every 2 minutes. I got some sleep curled up on some empty seats, but had to leave for people maybe getting on at this stop.

some light emerging through trees, approaching Flagstaff
-
@shistow I enjoyed that stopping at the station seems to mean blocking a road while people get off for a smoke break.

@doougle this is the most Doug suggestion. but, thanks, yeah, I think I will

i remember growing up, reading The Invisibles, enraptured by conspiracy theories in the New Mexico desert. there's an amount of reckoning to be done there, i reckon.

train is currently 3 hours late, due to being stuck behind some freight trains, one of which broke down. we're leaving Cleveland, Ohio, now, and I have to adjust my watch again.

other big news: been watching Terrace House: OND, and Seina just moved in...

stopped in Buffalo, and I got off to stretch an aching shoulder. delayed getting off by Border Patrol checking my passport, and delayed getting back on by Border Patrol removing a man from the train. dunno what the situation is, but we've not left the states on this trip...

doing a nanogenmo, and trying to use HTML for typesetting - is there a way to break text always at the end of a line, ignoring "words" etc? using monospace fonts, so i can hack around this, but maybe there's a less fiddly way?
-
@liza mm, got that, and also "word-break: break-all;", but it's still funky. i think the answer is to get hacky & insert line breaks every x characters...
-
@mildlydiverting @JonCatherall @TentacularMag going with "put it in a <pre> and insert a linebreak every x characters" right now...

@mcclure111 the most notable thing that has happened on this trip was a 12(?) year old girl walking me through her Robot Trains vore fanfic in great detail

@prehensile depends exactly what you're looking for... Em Short does a lot of great analysis of interesting things games are doing, and links to even more.

-
I mean, I know I'm preaching to the choir here. And it's not only people who do cutting edge AI & data work who deserve to be treated decently. But this is all just so stupid & cruel, it's hard to bear.
-
@mtrc Jelly No Puzzle was my instinctive answer. The game is so full of joy and fascination for it's mechanics. It wants to show you the cool trick! But the trick only makes sense if you find it yourself.
-
@mtrc so the classic jelly no puzzle level is one that starts you off in a situation that seems impossible, because it violates a implication of the rules you thought you knew. but no! if you do <sequence of things>, then you totally can do that.
-
@mtrc that format happens a couple of times... but the one that really sells this for me is the level where you start out, you make a tentative opening move... and everything cascades out like clockwork, solving the level automatically. just pure joy of "look at what's possible!"
-
@mtrc i mean, also it is very careful about teaching you how to solve things, introducing elements in the right order, combining challenges in such a way to let you make breakthroughs independently, all that good stuff
-
@mtrc i'm sure that stuff is pretty trivial to teach an AI to design, right? right??

-
@everestpipkin you fucking did it!! wishing you a speedy recovery!
-
@everestpipkin not anime, but the new Sabrina is stupid & fun & nicely compelling. also, may I recommend the wide world of badly translated light novels? the titles tell you the whole plot, things unfurl steadily, and amateur translation notes are the best thing.
-
@everestpipkin or if you want actually good characterization & world building & translation and so on, then the manga Dungeon Meshi is very good.

this is an excellent series of posts, looking at the state of games criticism. I really love that it engages with the material realities of the platforms where it takes place, and situates it within a long view. zoyastreet.wordpress.com/2018/11/09/hampering-the-search-for-real-criticism-discourse-empress-of-the-world/
-
it's published by Raspberry Pi, who have an educational remit. they're people who want to bring back the glory days of the BBC Micro, still on the get-kids-to-code train. which is a less shiny train than it once was, but still a pretty reasonable train to be on.
-
on that note, I want to speculate on the aims of Wireframe magazine, because it's not every day a new multiformat games magazine launches.
-
but it's hard to go from Scratch to Fortnite, y'know? so here's a magazine that comes along with a stories about Far Cry, and then, 2/3rds of the way through, there's a bunch of stuff about reward curves, with illustrative graphs.
-
and a thing i have heard from people teaching kids coding is that videogames are absolutely the way to do it. kids like games, they like making games (and it's a great way to connect coding to arts stuff). just think about all the kids learning Java to make their Minecraft mods.
-
of course, maybe it won't connect with kids, and the gap between material realities in the industry & what you can convey in a magazine is pretty wide. & who knows how to tackle the vastness of the industry in this kind of publication and still give people newsstand hooks…
-
there's other things in the cocktail that leads to shrieking claims of "lazy devs!!" and outrage over shrinking puddles, but wild ignorance over how games are actually made is in there for sure
-
maybe it's just chocolate coated broccoli... but I like the idea that there's a place for writing about games that can actually engage with some of the (imo fascinating, but I'm biased) processes that actually make up games production. not even just for the kids.
-
