  141. …in reply to @mtrc
@mtrc Jelly No Puzzle was my instinctive answer. The game is so full of joy and fascination for it's mechanics. It wants to show you the cool trick! But the trick only makes sense if you find it yourself.
  142. …in reply to @mtrc
@mtrc so the classic jelly no puzzle level is one that starts you off in a situation that seems impossible, because it violates a implication of the rules you thought you knew. but no! if you do <sequence of things>, then you totally can do that.
  143. …in reply to @v21
@mtrc that format happens a couple of times... but the one that really sells this for me is the level where you start out, you make a tentative opening move... and everything cascades out like clockwork, solving the level automatically. just pure joy of "look at what's possible!"
  144. …in reply to @mtrc
@mtrc i mean, also it is very careful about teaching you how to solve things, introducing elements in the right order, combining challenges in such a way to let you make breakthroughs independently, all that good stuff

@everestpipkin not anime, but the new Sabrina is stupid & fun & nicely compelling. also, may I recommend the wide world of badly translated light novels? the titles tell you the whole plot, things unfurl steadily, and amateur translation notes are the best thing.
  151. …in reply to @v21
@everestpipkin or if you want actually good characterization & world building & translation and so on, then the manga Dungeon Meshi is very good.

  164. this is an excellent series of posts, looking at the state of games criticism. I really love that it engages with the material realities of the platforms where it takes place, and situates it within a long view. zoyastreet.wordpress.com/2018/11/09/hampering-the-search-for-real-criticism-discourse-empress-of-the-world/
  165. …in reply to @v21
it's published by Raspberry Pi, who have an educational remit. they're people who want to bring back the glory days of the BBC Micro, still on the get-kids-to-code train. which is a less shiny train than it once was, but still a pretty reasonable train to be on.
  166. …in reply to @v21
on that note, I want to speculate on the aims of Wireframe magazine, because it's not every day a new multiformat games magazine launches.
  167. …in reply to @v21
but it's hard to go from Scratch to Fortnite, y'know? so here's a magazine that comes along with a stories about Far Cry, and then, 2/3rds of the way through, there's a bunch of stuff about reward curves, with illustrative graphs.
  168. …in reply to @v21
and a thing i have heard from people teaching kids coding is that videogames are absolutely the way to do it. kids like games, they like making games (and it's a great way to connect coding to arts stuff). just think about all the kids learning Java to make their Minecraft mods.
  169. …in reply to @v21
of course, maybe it won't connect with kids, and the gap between material realities in the industry & what you can convey in a magazine is pretty wide. & who knows how to tackle the vastness of the industry in this kind of publication and still give people newsstand hooks…
  170. …in reply to @v21
there's other things in the cocktail that leads to shrieking claims of "lazy devs!!" and outrage over shrinking puddles, but wild ignorance over how games are actually made is in there for sure
  171. …in reply to @v21
maybe it's just chocolate coated broccoli... but I like the idea that there's a place for writing about games that can actually engage with some of the (imo fascinating, but I'm biased) processes that actually make up games production. not even just for the kids.
