  16. …in reply to @unfortunatalie
@unfortunatalie I guess this only actually works if deselection is an empty threat? or else you're fighting a GE against lots of formerly Tory incumbent independents. which, sure, maybe you can win, but on a constituency level it doesn't seem like a *great* strategy
  17. …in reply to @unfortunatalie
@unfortunatalie right, but it's still pretty hard to win a seat as a new Tory candidate against a Brexit Party candidate AND the previous (deselected) MP. three way vote split. which is why I say that it means that deselection is an empty threat, made for public consumption

@megaRammy @mcclure111 (the snap election only happens if two thirds of parliament votes for it, so it's possible it won't happen! it seems plausible that the government is assuming they'll lose today so they can call an election and blame someone else for it!)

@mcclure111 @megaRammy Labour is going to vote for the bill blocking no deal. Labour has previously said "heck, yes, election whenever, bring it on", but is expected to change their minds today about the less hypothetical one Johnson is expected to call for the 14th October.

  40. okay, brief politics thread, because i can't stop myself
  41. …in reply to @v21
(and presumably by the time those 5 years are up, the whole no-deal Brexit thing will have blown over. or maybe we don't leave on the 31st after all! who knows? either case is beyond the political horizon)
  42. …in reply to @v21
so what Johnson wants to happen now is that an election gets called next week, for a few weeks before Brexit is currently scheduled to happen. then he can campaign for doing Brexit on the 31st, the Brexit Party won't interfere, he gets a big new majority, 5 years in power.
  43. …in reply to @v21
one thing i keep thinking about is all those Tories who voted aye tonight - are they gonna run as independents? it's not actually in Johnson's interests to have them causing chaos outside the party...
  44. …in reply to @v21
of course, Labour knows this. and you need a 2/3rds majority to call an election, because the Fixed Term Parliaments Act was not a particularly long-sighted bit of legislation. so... Labour, despite talking about wanting an election loads, might... not vote for one?
  45. …in reply to @v21
as such, he... wanted to lose today's vote? or at least, he knew he would. the priority, in any case, was to get some nice clips to be used in Facebook ads during the election. look tough, face down the remoaners & traitors
  46. …in reply to @v21
honestly, i have no idea what happens if the election gets voted down. sounds like the kind of thing I'd go for in a role playing game - the "interesting" outcome. that then turns into a fucking mess for everyone to actually figure out the consequences of.

@SzMarsupial it's very nice of you to schedule blowing up Parliament for a date when there aren't any MPs in it

  357. …in reply to @joshhadley1
@joshhadley1 i guess: are we in the EU on the 5th? or we crash out 5 days before, and the consequences of no-deal happen simultaneously with an election? (and, if so: what happened to the Benn act?) or is there some terrible manoeuvre that could happen to advance the election date?

@lorenschmidt mm, it's true, you'd only *usually* have connectivity preserved. unless you had a rule on top that kills smaller fragments if they become disconnected, and spawns them back in the main mass?? maybe that's too much of a hack, tho

@moreelen which brings up the foundational work of making sure everyone agrees on the broad aims and approaches of the design. or else these discussions can turn into endless proxy fights about those things.

I just had the weirdest run. I got a power that teleported me every time I took damage, and I also angered the gods. So, I just spent my time getting pinged from place to place, unable to rest within the holy mountain, seeing weird and wondrous sights as I pinged down.

I love that this game is so open to being broken, that it's unafraid to give you OP powers or entirely fuck you, that it's a set of ingredients that can combine in ways the developers didn't intend or plan for. Basically, I love that it is an action roguelike, with all that means
