@vectorpoem @lmichet @HTHRFLWRS Yeah, Blake's 7 is great, by which I mean it's self serious, sometimes ropey, and all the alien planets are shot in quarries just outside Cardiff. But it's weird, it's political, and it's definitely not afraid to commit.

why is why Microsoft Edge describes itself like this: "User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/79.0.3945.74 Safari/537.36 Edg/79.0.309.43"
-
when your browser fetches a web page, it sends a "User Agent string", which is a description of what browser it is. the server can then choose to send something different by looking at this string.
-
of course, if you're making a new browser, you want all the servers already out there to give you the same stuff they give to all the existing browsers
-
"Edg" isn't as typo, by the way - it's to distinguish it from the other version of Edge that used to exist, but works differently

was reading about the whole Inktober thing, and I think a good lesson to take away from it is that if you want to build a business on a community you should be good at community management (and the Inktober guy isn't, especially)
-
Inktober backstory: it's a hashtag where people post ink drawings every day in October. the dude who originated it has trademarked the name, and recently sent a (some?) cease and desists to artists selling artbooks with "Inktober"™ in the title. this caused controversy!
-
here's his carefully worded post, trying to smooth it over mrjakeparker.com/blog/2019/12/20/inktober
-
I'm not a community manager, and hindsight is 20:20, but I think posting up rules by which people could use the Inktober name before sending C&Ds would've been good. And just generally trying to activate and add to the community in a way that makes it clear the business exists.

so, for example: Cats is a guilty pleasure, not because it is a OTT trainwreck of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but because it clearly involved some terrible crunch for the VFX artists
-
at some point I decided that the idea of a guilty pleasure was bad: what's the point of feeling bad about your media consumption? but I have just decided that it's a good concept again, because sometimes you enjoy things that are bad not for reasons of taste, but for ethics
-
(and it's good to acknowledge that sometimes you do like and willing seek out things which are immoral. much better than tying yourself up trying to prove the enjoyable thing actually IS totally fine and ethical, thank you very much)

-
@ianholmes self improvement in terms of taste or ethics?
-
@ianholmes to be clear I am into judging things on both axes. I don't want to judge art purely on an ethical basis (which would be stultifying and utilitarian, I agree)
-
@ianholmes you're right that it doesn't exist in a separate dimension, and these things are never clean cut. but in this example, it's helpful for me to put aside the fact that that sounds boring as hell when thinking about whether it supports a racist mindset.
-
@SzMarsupial @anadukakis I just read @headfallsoff/1200399845909057537?s=19 and I am now consumed by thinking about whether I prefer "a little" (as I've been saying), "little a" (the original), or "a little" (again, but this time it's funny because it's deliberately wrong)
-
@SzMarsupial @anadukakis anyway, merry christmas
-
@Seemo ❤️
-
@jwaaaap @Doomlaser It's so good, I wish more people were talking about it.
-
@moreelen Merry Christmas!!

@dvsch This is exciting, and I just signed up. But I had to put in a fake zip code because I'm not based in the states.

@jwaaaap for large scale published physical books, I buy from wordery. non-Amazon, and often cheaper.

@metasynthie @jwaaaap I ploughed through all of The Corporation Wars to distract through recent upsetting political events. Would recommend! (not as good as Star Fraction, but good)

looks like it's time to dust off my slightly tedious argument that Proteus is the most walking simulator, because it is explicitly trying to simulate the emotional experience of going for a nice walk @crecenteb/1210196224927838208
-
besides, Gone Home isn't a walking simulator, it's a unusually well-scoped immersive sim
-
@metasynthie people keep trying to revise history! talking about walking sims as the way that games rediscovered the power of narrative.

@alicemazzy absolutely recommend More Work For Mother on this topic. it predates the app economy, but describes a lot of recognisable service businesses in the early part of the century. remembering especially a failed door-to-door hot dinner delivery service it spends a page or so on.

didn't find that shareware CD with Christmas Kye on, though
-
earlier today my brother found a crate with a bunch of our childhood games. here's stuff I remembered: -The Sims -Caesar III -GTA 3 -Point Blank (and a lightgun) -Puzzle Bobble -Big Red Racing -an original Gameboy -Fifa 98 -lots of mysterious blank CDs (some with pirated stuff)
-
it's fun to look back and realise that actually, my tastes have stayed pretty consistent over the years. and try to remember the stuff that was actually a part of my childhood, not just the stuff that's in the generic package of nostalgic childhood games.
-
I played to the end of Chrono Trigger in ZSNES, the mapping splayed out over the keyboard. you had to be careful not to set the bindings to something where you'd press alt & space simultaneously, because that combo would trigger a windows shortcut.
-
and there was a screen where the emulation couldn't a translucent cloud layer correctly, so you had to switch off that layer from rendering manually to get past. is this a relatable gaming memory?
-
shoutout to ArchNacho & Tortilla Godzilla's Quality ROMs - a big influence on my taste in games at a formative age

i have been low key wondering how to spell "zhuzh" for a while now, but now i know.
-
not that it is the kind of word with a consistent spelling. i say it a little bit further forward in the mouth, so it seemed like it'd start with a j... but the tongue doesn't make contact with the roof of the mouth, so maybe zh makes more sense.

@alphachar I mean, what I typically do is distract myself from those thoughts by compulsively reading (twitter/a book/etc). But that's not actually a healthy approach.
-
@alphachar What I think is better is to really unpick the comparisons you're making. Who am I comparing myself against? Is it one person, or a composite of all the good attributes of everyone I can think of? What strengths do I have that I'm shrugging off as the baseline, not worth counting
-
@alphachar thank you for the opportunity to poke at this squishy bit of myself I generally avoid looking at while I'm in a good place. and: I'm glad to know you and find you an impressive person! not worm!
-
@mildlydiverting that also tracks... I was just typing random collections of letters and staring at them wondering if anyone would have any idea what I would be trying to say! so it's good to have at least one spelling
-
@PrototypeCube @ekvous i was once at a pub and there was a raffle and James Corden did the bit of pretending he'd won. like 3 times in a row. fuck him.

i am pretty sure there are apps for this, but i am pretty sure that all of them are going to make me feel weird about eating - suggestion for one that wouldn't? or should i just not even try, and use paper/Sheets/Airtable and figure it out myself afterwards?

@GretchenAMcC seems like you're applying that pretty well and naturally in a lot of your stuff! people see forms of speech, wonder at them, and then you use that hook to go into why and what's happening
-
@GretchenAMcC yes, yes, sorry, i meant naturally as in in a way that seems unforced and more determined by the situation than the concept of intellectual need. especially because unlike a made up thing in a videogame, you have far less control of the context.

@FlorianVltmn i enjoyed it! it has the kind of worldbuilding i like, where it starts with a fantasy trope, and then twists it by taking it just a bit more seriously than it's usually taken. the kind of show where the dwarves try to start a union. no previous knowledge of the franchise here.

@zachlieberman @golan the Ultimarc arcade board can be programmed this way, too - it has a USB keyboard out, and a PS2 keyboard in, and types out a little menu, letting you push an arcade button then press a key to bind them together.
