-
@mossmouth @tha_rami it doesn't directly address the point at hand, but this discussion makes me think about the essay "Postcolonial Catan" (English version lower on the page) faidutti.com/blog/?p=3780 - all about how boardgames lean on exoticised caricatures of other cultures.
-
@mossmouth @tha_rami specifically: wanting the setting to do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of explaining how things relate, what's going on, etc. do you use your limited attention for explaining what's going on on getting people up to speed with the setting? or do you use it to teach mechanics?

@erquhart @downdogapp think of it like this: when you create an account, you get a free 14 day trial before you have to subscribe. After that period, you need to subscribe (through the standard method). Once you're subscribed, you cancel in the standard way. What's hard to manage about that?

@erquhart @downdogapp right - but the case at hand is someone using their system and finding a way to make it work without auto-renewal. and being told that's not allowed, that it is mandatory to have auto-renewal.

@GalaxyKate v good points on accessibility! but i guess my larger point is that the way you sell tickets, give basic info etc is 100% part of the experience (and thus, to me, part of the art). which doesn't mean you should make it inaccessible, that's just bad design.
-
@GalaxyKate the place i am most interested in doing interesting stuff when putting on events is in the logistics & outreach - that's where the meat of the work goes! that's the interesting bit, where the money is! (it's also the bit that's most important to not fuck up, ofc)

this is all true, but I'm not sure it's just the internet - you could apply similar readings to early political cartoons and pamphlets, implying things about their enemies' political opinions by dressing them up as macaronis. @Millicentsomer/1281414271692234753
-
@alexhern yeah: i do think the internet has changed and accelerated and amplified these effects... but A Modest Proposal looks like debate but isn't. And satire and winking references are exactly the kind of thing that's doesn't age, and is hard for us to appreciate from our current point.
-
On the one hand, I make a point to say "player" rather than "user", and I think this is important… On the other, as Olia Lialina outlines here, this attitude embeds a sense that the user ideally does not notice and has no agency over the software contemporary-home-computing.org/turing-complete-user/ @femkesvs/1281329048678006784

which, y'know, is probably the place that Uber wants to be. but it might not be the place that you want to be.

i guess the larger lesson here is humility. designing a user experience to help people solve problems, but accepting that some of those people are going to use it to solve problems you haven't considered, and in ways you didn't plan for - and that that's a good thing.
-
@tametick @jaytholen was about to suggest logical increments - it's also just useful to get an idea of prices and specs you want, and then seeing what you can get prebuilt

lots of people try to make light up dice, but the issue of cramming a battery & charging setup in there makes them super pricey. powering them entirely from an inductive ring is very interesting indeed! @BanhammersWrath/1281686898868736000
-
as noted in the thread, there's stuff to solve to make sure there's an inductive ring at the right orientation... I'd be curious if you could put smarts on them so they could report back what they've rolled... but seems plausible to get a set of dice + mat under $100 retail?
-
@hoskingc sounds relatively expensive to put into every individual dice (and tricky to cast in resin, too)
-
and there's some nice ceremony in rolling dice onto a literal magic circle, at which point they come alive
-
looking at this Kickstarter: they say a set of 6 dice will retail at $179 kickstarter.com/projects/1928372437/godice-your-favorite-dice-games-reimagined/rewards (they use a supercapacitor! charge in 10 secs! cool! but that also means they don't have enough power to make them light up)
-
@Radical_Em not sure! seems solvable, though - offsetting the tech in the resin or rearranging the electronics layout... a fun puzzle for the physical designer, I'm sure
-
it's very exciting to have more smart people not from games writing about games!! @avawongdavies/1282021022963834880

@ojahnn define them at the top if I just want to get this done, pass as a command line args if I want to neaten it up (and then make a help etc etc), pass as an env file if I actually want to build this into some kind of ongoing pipeline
-
@ojahnn (although stuff that changes on each execution probably still comes in via command line args - stuff that's fixed comes in via the env file)
-
@ojahnn write a script to pass the arguments in
-
@ojahnn yes, that answer was a joking-not-joking kind of answer. really, it depends on the tradeoffs you want to make between expedience and clarity... but also, there's something to be said for a solution that's ugly but straightforward

@tburrellsaward @infovore @jean_simonet @CMONGames ah, and using that grid of antennae to detect position as well! always wanted to do something with that.
-
@KiraArghy yeah, as soon as "egg" is used in any context other than applying to your own prior experience... it's just super flattening and assumes people don't have the authority to talk about their own identity.

@pillowfort very bold coming from someone who posted this earlier today @pillowfort/1282256723454066690?s=19
-
@tburrellsaward @infovore @jean_simonet @CMONGames ahhh, I was mulling that over today as well. if the game is good, that's cool, but then you've got to explain/sell the game AND the tech & that's difficult. but if it's just cool dice for the game you already play, it's more obviously worthwhile.
