-
@ellaguro depressingly true. indie games would be better with some robust criticism, or at least they'd be more egalitarian if you didn't have to already be in the Scene in order to gain access to the spaces where people actually criticize shit.
-
@ellaguro wish i hadn't entirely internalised this lesson :)
-
@artcollisions folding laundry is great to do during meetings you're mainly listening to. honestly find it helps me pay attention.
-
@ellaguro in the spirit of disagreement we're summoning here: no, i don't think this is capitalism's fault, really. like, it definitely doesn't make it better - but the pressures here are largely social, not economic, i think
-
@ellaguro yes, some indies have become wealthy through this, and there is an economic stake to this - but being respected by the indie scene & surviving making games are v different things
-
@ellaguro i guess i am thinking this especially because this is reminding me of this em reed piece: emreed.net/flappyrevenge.html

-
i often think about the balance of: number of applications * avg time spent on each application * reasonable day rate vs total money granted because i am not sure that the 2nd number is always larger
-
the skills & approach needed to successfully get funding and the skills & approach needed to do a good art can be quite different! & that that's often a shame?
-
here's two takes on grant funding (prompted by that good @netgal_emi post, here it is: emreed.net/VGArtsFunding.html)
-
neither of these are games specific, really. to be honest, they're mainly about designing good processes & thinking carefully about what the form looks like. maybe this is the game designer in me...
-
what i am saying is that maybe a better way to give grants is: - quick form - panel filters out stuff that doesn't meet a baseline standard of competence - money is randomly allocated to projects beyond that
-
(& just think how nice it would be to be able to blame a RNG for not getting a grant approved!)
-
@EMadalengoitia @piesaac yeah: not saying spread the money evenly, but funders trying to fund only the absolute best things leads to an arms race in terms of time spent on applications, and disincentivizes innovation (harder to explain weird new shit on the form)
-
@EMadalengoitia @piesaac and yes, continuing funding is also valuable! every fund has a different situation and different objectives, and it makes sense that the design would change. but I still think that there's room for improvement.

@everestpipkin it is! good eye! i went looking for it cuz of the comments on this @3liza/1291537850635149313 - i saw it and was like "that's bad" and then "wait, maybe i like it" and then "it's hard to look at without already knowing the context i'm seeing it in"
-
@hollygramazio I feel okay about those things - or, I guess I recognize that kind of composition from his paintings, which I have unresolved feelings about, but do definitely respect.
-
@everestpipkin yeah - I have had this journey with a few artists, initially ambivalent or actively dislike them, then understanding the thing that they're interested in & pursuing and it's like oh! yes. and then their stuff is very compelling.
-
@everestpipkin (this happened to me with Bridget Riley & she's now one of my favourite artists)
-
@everestpipkin actually the other thing this makes me think of is Oikospiel. which was so good in part because it was so raw & My First Unity Project, not hiding the nature of the medium at all but also done by someone with such a clear command of interactivity & such strong aims.
-
@patrickashe thank you, good fact, this contribution has brightened my day
-
i'm going to miss the foxes when we move
-
@everestpipkin no, these are real good thoughts, thank you. i still come from the indie game designer mindset of "do lots of things badly, grab whatever is to hand in order to solve the problem". some similarities wrt craft, but not the same.

Q: does the homepage for laka.co give the impression that it is: - a co-op, run for the benefit of it's members - a startup, running on venture capital funding & logic @adrianhon/1292017469301895173
-
the answer is found in their most recent blogpost, about a $4.7m funding round it mentions they have 5000 customers - so, about £500k-£1m revenue a year, about £100k-£200k of which doesn't immediately flow out to pay claims. 21 members of staff. (laka.co/gb/blog/all/announcing-our-recent-funding-round/)
-
i find it actively fun to do the maths on this stuff & try to figure out burn rates & business models.
-
@adrianhon i mean, the fact that i posed the question was probably the biggest giveaway. but sometimes people who are shithot designers & copywriters start co-ops!
-
i was curious if these references would twig to anyone who didn't already know them & i found my answer: @NiallEM/1292029997075619840 i don't know homestarrunner enough to recognise the reference, so i just accepted it as normal words
-
this is, by the way, why it's okay for Tamsyn Muir to put in stupid references but i can still look down on Ready Player One - they're fun if you recognise them, but are just bits of interesting phasing if you don't
-
@adrianhon yeah, a weird thing where if i was starting a co-op to compete with Laka, I'd maybe be... deliberately less slick to signal actual co-op cred? gets very quadruple bluff very quickly

@omarieclaire if I'm designing & implementing I have to consciously switch between the two modes. or I'll get stuck just implementing, and won't step out to do the hard/scary thinking.
-
@omarieclaire but I did make the transition from coder to designer - I was always engaged by the design, and often worked on projects where there was an absence of clear & detailed design. so I would do it because it needed doing.
-
@omarieclaire but making the transition to being mainly a game designer has been a whole journey. and mainly not about the actual design part : the bigger part of the job is communication & getting people aligned.

-
@sarahlongthorne makes me think of Disco Elysium, as others have said - but also Over The Alps. you don't start by creating a personality blueprint - but your choices in the game are more about defining the character you're playing as than about branching the story

-
@marmaladegirl @moreelen oh, it's a joke about the relatively lower salaries in games versus the same skillet outside of games

@marmaladegirl @moreelen yeah, that has changed, actually - also that tweet was influenced by the fact that I think I'm quite a "UX-y" designer, so I probably think of them as a more similar role than some other game designers would.

-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen honestly doing this stuff online/async can make it much more accessible. adding ideas to a shared doc/sheet/board means you can see other people's ideas & riff off them, but don't have to deal with a realtime social situation while also thinking
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen one pitfall can be that people go into lots of detail/only share stuff that's well thought through - if you're in a position of influence, you can try to counteract this by putting in half-formed blobs of thoughts yourself, to keep the bar low
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen (and also because they might not be viable ideas in themselves, but might spark something in someone else)
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen this is basically Rosa's 100 ideas - the focus is on quantity, and it's nice to have a specific number like that to keep people squeezing their brains for more ideas, rather than stopping once they have a good one
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen the slightly more controversial thing is that, personally, i hate the "no criticism" rules of many brainstorming processes. understand not wanting to put up a high bar & keep it open & welcoming - but i find that critical process very generative for new ideas.
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen (rules about "yes, and" can be productive - but often i get excited by "your idea, but focusing in on this one aspect, dropping the rest" & it's frustrating to have that shut down)
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen but luckily this *also* works well in async collaboration. commenting on other people's ideas, discussing them etc can drive out design insights & shared understanding, and because it happens to the side, doesn't block new ideas from being formed, or lead to that idea happening
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen easy with a team with a shared context & high level of trust... but anything can work in that environment. worth being careful about framing it etc... but the most important thing is setting norms in practice & rewarding the right things. be vulnerable if you want the team to be!
-
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen oh, the other thing (which steps outside of this a little) - is trying to stop individual people from "owning" an idea. they should be credited, they can have opinions about what idea is best. but try not to say "Ziz's idea" but rather "the swimming idea" or whatever

-
@tburrellsaward @SeaSylphGames @moreelen definitely want to discourage super thought-through stuff when you're in that early ideation phase, and want to make sure you're moving through stages of firming stuff up with a group involved at each stage, not just shortcircuiting on the first viable idea
-
@tburrellsaward @SeaSylphGames @moreelen but it's also worth considering the reason you want different people involved at different stages: - to generate more/more divergent ideas - to make everyone feel like they have ownership of the idea it can also be fine for the person who's specific field it is to make a call
-

@SuperviseurB then the issue is it is failing to retrieve the images - first, check that they're still there, and still able to be hotlinked

@ok_remi_ok you can't walk into the hole UNLESS elsewhere in the game pleasure is derived from avoiding walking into holes
-
@ok_remi_ok okay, yes, I see your point. new answer: you walk into the the hole and start falling. you fall indefinitely. quitting the game and restarting just shows you still falling. the game uses cloud saves so any device you play it on in the future: just Hole.

@adrianhon I agree, but would go even further @v21/1276580508894445569?s=19

@adrianhon at the end of a book, I often want to linger, to ease back out of the book, to have more context for what I've just read. at the start... well, most books do a good job of setting their own context.

@thairyn is this the one where the whole series is a single match?
-
this is a good & thoughtful thread. i'm not sure how much i agree with it, but that's also because i'm new to working at the kind of scale where there are multiple designers working on separate details of the game @krides/1297042161104543745
-
@weeble i assume that's the case, yeah - have been ill and so not looked into it, but going to do an investigation at some point to make sure they all post as pngs
-
@Coleo_Kin solid design principles too - presumably adding that stuff increases the visible complexity of the tooling, which makes it less friendly for new people. if you've been around for long enough to ask for these specific features, you can probably use the hacks.

-
oh, actually, the thing i would add: make your illustrations and diagrams as quick & dirty as possible as your team culture allows. legibility and editability are the priorities, and looking pretty can pull against that
-
@derElbi hm. this is a good idea (my docs have been kind of ad-hoc so far, but we're moving towards having a confluence/repo for finalized design docs). will have to think about templates!
-
RT @montsichum: a gameplay programmer sent this 😂
-
@derElbi yep - esp as we're remote, we're thinking with docs, as well as recording outcomes with them. that's a shift we're very aware of, and how we plan to deal with the docs => wiki transition.
