  4. …in reply to @timoni
@timoni @Spotify imo, there are two reasons Spotify is successful: - well made software - getting the major labels on board (via sweetheart equity deals early on, which made them invested in Spotify's success rather than primarily seeing it as a threat to royalty rates)
  5. …in reply to @v21
@timoni @Spotify ofc, royalty rates are shared with artists, equity isn't. that's the foundation Spotify operates from: maybe it was the inevitable route that some streaming service would take to success, but I don't think you can portray Spotify as a neutral party in that shift.

  64. …in reply to @ellaguro
@ellaguro depressingly true. indie games would be better with some robust criticism, or at least they'd be more egalitarian if you didn't have to already be in the Scene in order to gain access to the spaces where people actually criticize shit.

@ellaguro in the spirit of disagreement we're summoning here: no, i don't think this is capitalism's fault, really. like, it definitely doesn't make it better - but the pressures here are largely social, not economic, i think
  68. …in reply to @v21
@ellaguro yes, some indies have become wealthy through this, and there is an economic stake to this - but being respected by the indie scene & surviving making games are v different things

the skills & approach needed to successfully get funding and the skills & approach needed to do a good art can be quite different! & that that's often a shame?
  74. here's two takes on grant funding (prompted by that good @netgal_emi post, here it is: emreed.net/VGArtsFunding.html)
  75. …in reply to @v21
neither of these are games specific, really. to be honest, they're mainly about designing good processes & thinking carefully about what the form looks like. maybe this is the game designer in me...
  76. …in reply to @v21
what i am saying is that maybe a better way to give grants is: - quick form - panel filters out stuff that doesn't meet a baseline standard of competence - money is randomly allocated to projects beyond that
  77. …in reply to @v21
(& just think how nice it would be to be able to blame a RNG for not getting a grant approved!)
  78. …in reply to @EMadalengoitia
@EMadalengoitia @piesaac yeah: not saying spread the money evenly, but funders trying to fund only the absolute best things leads to an arms race in terms of time spent on applications, and disincentivizes innovation (harder to explain weird new shit on the form)
  79. …in reply to @EMadalengoitia
@EMadalengoitia @piesaac and yes, continuing funding is also valuable! every fund has a different situation and different objectives, and it makes sense that the design would change. but I still think that there's room for improvement.

  87. …in reply to @everestpipkin
@everestpipkin yeah - I have had this journey with a few artists, initially ambivalent or actively dislike them, then understanding the thing that they're interested in & pursuing and it's like oh! yes. and then their stuff is very compelling.

  104. Q: does the homepage for laka.co give the impression that it is: - a co-op, run for the benefit of it's members - a startup, running on venture capital funding & logic @adrianhon/1292017469301895173
  105. …in reply to @v21
the answer is found in their most recent blogpost, about a $4.7m funding round it mentions they have 5000 customers - so, about £500k-£1m revenue a year, about £100k-£200k of which doesn't immediately flow out to pay claims. 21 members of staff. @adrianhon i mean, the fact that i posed the question was probably the biggest giveaway. but sometimes people who are shithot designers & copywriters start co-ops!

  110. …in reply to @adrianhon

  126. …in reply to @v21
@omarieclaire but I did make the transition from coder to designer - I was always engaged by the design, and often worked on projects where there was an absence of clear & detailed design. so I would do it because it needed doing.

  153. …in reply to @zizmakesgames
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen honestly doing this stuff online/async can make it much more accessible. adding ideas to a shared doc/sheet/board means you can see other people's ideas & riff off them, but don't have to deal with a realtime social situation while also thinking
  154. …in reply to @v21
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen one pitfall can be that people go into lots of detail/only share stuff that's well thought through - if you're in a position of influence, you can try to counteract this by putting in half-formed blobs of thoughts yourself, to keep the bar low
  155. …in reply to @v21
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen (and also because they might not be viable ideas in themselves, but might spark something in someone else)
  156. …in reply to @v21
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen this is basically Rosa's 100 ideas - the focus is on quantity, and it's nice to have a specific number like that to keep people squeezing their brains for more ideas, rather than stopping once they have a good one
  157. …in reply to @v21
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen the slightly more controversial thing is that, personally, i hate the "no criticism" rules of many brainstorming processes. understand not wanting to put up a high bar & keep it open & welcoming - but i find that critical process very generative for new ideas.
  158. …in reply to @v21
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen (rules about "yes, and" can be productive - but often i get excited by "your idea, but focusing in on this one aspect, dropping the rest" & it's frustrating to have that shut down)
  159. …in reply to @v21
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen but luckily this *also* works well in async collaboration. commenting on other people's ideas, discussing them etc can drive out design insights & shared understanding, and because it happens to the side, doesn't block new ideas from being formed, or lead to that idea happening
  160. …in reply to @zizmakesgames
@SeaSylphGames @moreelen easy with a team with a shared context & high level of trust... but anything can work in that environment. worth being careful about framing it etc... but the most important thing is setting norms in practice & rewarding the right things. be vulnerable if you want the team to be!

@SeaSylphGames @moreelen oh, the other thing (which steps outside of this a little) - is trying to stop individual people from "owning" an idea. they should be credited, they can have opinions about what idea is best. but try not to say "Ziz's idea" but rather "the swimming idea" or whatever

  176. …in reply to @v21
@tburrellsaward @SeaSylphGames @moreelen definitely want to discourage super thought-through stuff when you're in that early ideation phase, and want to make sure you're moving through stages of firming stuff up with a group involved at each stage, not just shortcircuiting on the first viable idea
  177. …in reply to @v21
@tburrellsaward @SeaSylphGames @moreelen but it's also worth considering the reason you want different people involved at different stages: - to generate more/more divergent ideas - to make everyone feel like they have ownership of the idea it can also be fine for the person who's specific field it is to make a call
