@jericawebber @philippawarr I have been slowly watching this, too. It's nice and gentle and satisfying. And occasionally going back to Jonathan Creek when I need a level of comfort that's one step further.

@philippawarr I got into Umbrella Academy a little bit ago - lots of nonsense running around trying to solve increasingly ridiculous situations. It's the kind of show with a monkey butler.

  35. …in reply to @catacalypto
@catacalypto yeah, for sure - and it's not like each side is a single unified thing. crits are good, but stop after being a student, QA is good but isn't a critical conversation. good to borrow tools & have a sense of what other things are possible.
  36. …in reply to @v21
@catacalypto but also! good to acknowledge the things that we have that *do* work, and that we should appreciate
  37. …in reply to @Coleo_Kin
@Coleo_Kin all of this is true, but! - i want more criticism, not to make games more successful but to make them better. there's a link between those two things, but it is, uhhhh, complicated & arbitrary
  38. …in reply to @v21
@Coleo_Kin - i still think it's good for a creator to be exposed to an ecosystem of criticism, even if not about their thing in general & even if it's about it's place in culture, not "hey, fix this". hard to be thoughtful on that level without knowing what that looks like
  39. …in reply to @Coleo_Kin
@Coleo_Kin oh, for sure - and like, understanding, as a creator, your stance on this stuff and being able to say "that's wrong" or "i don't care" is a big improvement over not having the conversation.
  40. …in reply to @Coleo_Kin

  42. …in reply to @Coleo_Kin
@Coleo_Kin yeah, the ideal scenario is that there's a critical conversation that helps that experimental scene push further... but there's a ton of ways that can go wrong! for all that I want this stuff to be accessible to people without the right friends... it's still a creative community.

  65. …in reply to @rachelcoldicutt
@rachelcoldicutt @naomialderman @adrianhon @andrhia the thing that gets me is that there are countries which are more or less back to normal - New Zealand, for example. we're obviously larger & less isolated... but i do not think the place we're in is inevitable
  66. …in reply to @v21
@rachelcoldicutt @naomialderman @adrianhon @andrhia which is to say that i don't think there will be a tech fix (even a vaccine) that will come and save us suddenly - always the same struggle to implement it correctly & make it actually work. the tech can help, ofc...
  67. …in reply to @v21
@rachelcoldicutt @naomialderman @adrianhon @andrhia so, yes, i agree, for the foreseeable, this is the new normal, and we need to find ways to endure & find joy in it. easier to say as someone who decided to take a job making videogames rather than try to make a go of curating irl events, of course...
  68. …in reply to @rachelcoldicutt
@rachelcoldicutt @naomialderman @adrianhon @andrhia yep. and my point is that that is the bigger limiting factor, not the existence of a vaccine. :/

@dinosaurrparty Viv managed to get one at the pharmacy by the Jenner Practice. But there's a shortage this year, and they're generally being reserved for people in high risk groups, so not surprised to hear you're struggling to find one.

@dinosaurrparty (don't think I've ever had a flu shot - generally the advice is here not to bother unless you are high risk. but normally you can still get them if you try)

turns out GPT2 is perfectly good for making poetry with, but you need to abandon any pretence of renouncing authorship, choose a good corpus to tune it with & accept that whatever you produce will also speak with the voice of a billion scraped Reddit posts.

  383. when people post job ads from the company they work for and say: "even if you don't have all the requirements, apply anyway", do they realise they are saying "join a company with policies hostile to under-represented people that I haven't been able to or haven't tried to change"?

I mean, I get it, I am pretty sure I have done this, it's not even bad advice to give. But.
  385. LRT: the bigger the platform, the harder the power law seems to bite. so for a wide prosperous band of studios, you want many platforms, many genres, many communities, many niches.

  387. …in reply to @v21
Anyway, the actual biggest point here is that if you get to edit job listings, make sure you're only asking for requirements and qualifications you actually care about. Because otherwise you'll just filter for bullshitters and chancers. Also, statistically, men.

  391. …in reply to @doubtmeidareyou
@acciogoals sure - there's a gendered difference in whether people apply for jobs where they don't meet all of the requirements (lots of refs for this, eg this hbr.org/2014/08/why-women-dont-apply-for-jobs-unless-theyre-100-qualified). you can try to fix this on the applicant's side, encouraging them to apply anyway...
  392. …in reply to @v21
@acciogoals or, since these are not actually requirements, but merely desired things from a candidate... why not list them as desirable, rather than necessary? a clearer, more precise listing. of course you want these things, but could you accept equivalents?
  393. …in reply to @v21
@acciogoals lots of other ways this stuff cuts across in terms of opening up access: for example, needing a degree, excluding people from non-traditional backgrounds who are already working at this level (this is one that happens in software engineering all the time)
