  38. me reading about the Let's Encrypt certificate expiry issue: looks fun! glad that'll never affect me! me having to deal with errors caused by the Let's Encrypt cert expiring: oh noooo!
  39. …in reply to @Beatboxingbot
@Beatboxingbot okay, i know what i have to do, but it involves upgrading something that might break something else... so i am not going to do it at 11pm, hah. will hopefully get to it this weekend, or else next week.
  40. …in reply to @v21
@Beatboxingbot if you're curious, the issue is that the website that hosts the images your bot tweets from has a security certificate that relies upon a security certificate that has changed over... and my server doesn't yet know to trust the new certificate, so refuses to download the images.
  41. …in reply to @v21
  42. CBDQ notice: a subset of bots that tweet images have stopped doing that, for reasons related to the quote-tweet. will be fixing this soon, but not right now: upgrading things at 11:30pm is rarely a good idea. @v21/1444063891206594561

  48. sysadmin/node help wanted: i downloaded a fresh copy of node, extracted it, and went into bin/ and tried to run it directly... but bash says "No such file or directory" all the search results for this are about system node/stuff not being at the right path. what's up??
  49. …in reply to @v21
was also seeing this when trying to install with nvm - nvm thinks it's there, "which node" points to the nvm install, but same error. old nvm installs of node continue to work fine.
  50. …in reply to @mcclure111
@mcclure111 tried both (tried restarting the machine, even), same deal
  51. …in reply to @cr3
@cr3 haha - there's an x in it! but i did try chmod a+x, no effect
  52. …in reply to @russss
@russss ah, that would've made sense! but alas: v21@v21:~/node-v14.18.0-linux-x64/bin$ ldd ./node not a dynamic executable
  53. …in reply to @mcclure111
@mcclure111 @cr3 oh, that would make sense - but no, pretty sure this is 64 bit executable on a 64 bit machine
  54. …in reply to @cr3
@cr3 @mcclure111 @russss tipped me off to possibly the answer: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 does not exist, even though it's a 64 bit system.
  55. testing this pesky certificate expiry thing! is this a cover of Shonen Jump?
  56. …in reply to @v21
    oh, hey, it is!
  57. …in reply to @russss
@russss @cr3 @mcclure111 thank you all for your help in tracking down this issue. i have decided the actual fix is to migrate all my shit to a server that is less crufty and ancient, and meanwhile have patched it a different way. but it is very helpful to know what the core of the problem is.
  58. …in reply to @v21
after delving into the very depths of linux system admin nonsense, i fixed it a different way (and have some less urgent maintenance to do generally) @v21/1444374209157898245?s=20

@radiodario i am so glad that worked and i did not have to actually solve the issue with not finding the 64 bit linker

  63. …in reply to @slunglowalan
@slunglowalan seems to me that the polls still haven't shifted much - within the margin of error, or close to it. most people don't care about politics, didn't notice the speech, haven't changed their minds.
  64. …in reply to @neoeno
@neoeno yep, I think so - newer node was looking for a linker in a 64 bit path (/lib64/something.so), but my server was upgraded from 32 bit and so doesn't have stuff at the right path (just /lib/something.so)
  65. …in reply to @v21
@neoeno can see the communal debugging process playing out leading up to this reply @v21/1444377666669395972?s=19 if you want the action replay

  67. I'm reading Uzumaki to creep myself out before bedtime, and this has been said before, but the way that horrific things happen and people don't leave, they stay living in the town as the ominous spiral smoke gathers over the crematorium, as folks go mad.
  68. …in reply to @v21
The trains still run, people commute in and out for work or school. You could leave any time, but... no-one else is? Where would you go? Why would you say you left? You talk to your girlfriend but she isn't sure, so you don't.
  69. …in reply to @v21

  72. i had a chance to play frog zk with friends and it was a good time. pinging off corners and trying to get down some difficult cracks, going "oh, i think this was a bad route". best representation of going bouldering with friends in a videogame i've seen. thatsnot.fun/zk-map-for-stranger/
  73. …in reply to @v21
however - it is the kind of game that wants you to strafe jump. so. might also be a representation of going bouldering with friends and then it turns out you're not actually very good at climbing.
  74. …in reply to @v21
it is refreshing to play a videogame with extraneous elements, facing up to a problem without knowing there is a solution, or knowing there might be multiple solutions (but also, as Bennett says, without it being procedural. authored but loosely)
  75. …in reply to @v21
the opposite of the thing you learn to do in a puzzle game, where it's unsatisfying if every clue is not used at least once. versus real life problems which are generally about wading through a mass of irrelevancies trying to pick out the crucial thing that it turns on.

@shalev_moran @hollygramazio @adrianhon oh, i guess. plus it solves plot problems: - well paying enough for her to live comfortably in NY - kinda creative/non corporate - matches her grumpy hermit nature - has to turn up to like, 1 meeting, but it's not a huge deal if she blows it off all week

  91. …in reply to @v21
@hollygramazio i binged a bunch of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime while bedbound last year & have watched like one ep of Sword Art Online and never really got into it. SAO counts because it's explicitly a game, but most of these shows (like slime) just have generic RPG fantasy settings
  92. …in reply to @v21
@hollygramazio by which i mean, like, they explicitly talk about gaining abilities, and monsters being "level 1" etc.
  93. …in reply to @v21
@hollygramazio also remember reading this one about being a vending machine en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reborn_as_a_Vending_Machine,_I_Now_Wander_the_Dungeon - also not textually inside a videogame, just set in a RPG world

  199. as far as I can see, the fundamental difference between DAOs and co-ops is that in co-ops voting rights and ownership are typically split between all members equally, and in DAOs it's a function of how much equity you have bought or been given.

@ldodds @allthebarclays huh, damn. thanks for letting me know. had hoped I'd fixed it by bodging in a delay for it to render, but I guess I have to bodge in even more delay?
  530. frontend experts, a question for you. I'm using Puppeteer to puppet a headless Chromium to render SVGs. tried triggering the capture after the load event, but images within the SVGs hadn't rendered. is there a better event to listen for? or do I just bodge a few seconds delay in?
  531. …in reply to @ldodds
@ldodds @allthebarclays think it's just rendering delays - waiting for all the networking stuff to have happened. are the images especially large? (I would still like to fix this on my end, it's a sharp corner for any future user)

  533. …in reply to @guided1
@guided1 SVGs are in the initial page, but DOMContentLoaded happens before all the network requests are done, so I think it's too early
  534. …in reply to @v21
after a bit of digging into it, it seems like the answer is to wait for two requestAnimationFrames to pass. seems like there should be a simpler way! stackoverflow.com/questions/14578356/how-to-detect-when-an-image-has-finished-rendering-in-the-browser-i-e-painted

  537. …in reply to @guided1
@guided1 yep! getting this after waiting for the load event, then waiting half a sec!
  538. …in reply to @guided1
@guided1 it's slow because it's running on a server without any GPUs. but the order of events is normal!
  539. …in reply to @Orangetronic
@Orangetronic just loaded as DOM nodes
  540. …in reply to @guided1
@guided1 was looking at those - but no event for "done painting" only "we're starting painting now!"
  541. …in reply to @v21
after actually trying that... nope. time to just crank the delay up!
  542. …in reply to @Orangetronic
@Orangetronic i would've assumed that would fire after the 'load' event - which is too early!
  543. …in reply to @ldodds
@ldodds @allthebarclays have cranked up the delay again & tested with a few Barclays - seems to be good now? lmk!
  544. …in reply to @Orangetronic
@Orangetronic @defaced i did think about that... but: - a SO comment saying that the resize happens before load these days - they're user-supplied SVGs, so lots of potential for hairy edge cases once i start poking around inside the SVGs themselves.
  545. …in reply to @DayoftheMutants
@netgal_emi it.. should be? not sure why this didn't frog
  546. …in reply to @Orangetronic
    @Orangetronic @defaced i wish it was just a timeout!! no, it's a full-on delay.
  547. …in reply to @Orangetronic
@Orangetronic @defaced yeah - pulling in external images, doing funky stuff to make text wrapping work. maybe i would go that route if i was making it now, but i don't want to retroactively break bots if i can avoid it.
  548. …in reply to @defaced
@defaced @Orangetronic already waiting on that - it's the delay between getting the data and painting it that's the issue.

@defaced @Orangetronic happy to not support animation: my test SVG is a simple one just containing an <image> element. and i tried 4 RAFs, and it still wasn't fully painted- doesn't seem like they necessarily block on waiting for painting to complete.

makes total sense, too, from a purely pragmatic POV. either the game doesn't use Steam payment services, in which case they're freeloaders and why not boot 'em. or they do, in which case Steam is acting like a complicated crypto exchange. which they absolutely don't wanna be.
  560. …in reply to @v21
one of the biggest headaches Steam has to deal with is people using it to launder stolen money/rinse stolen credit cards. buy games/items, resell for real money, etc. this is just another channel for that to happen via.
  561. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern those things absolutely have value, and they know it. but the problem with allowing people to extract that value is that game economies become another way to use stolen credit cards. and then Steam gets hit with the chargebacks.

@mountain_ghosts these are secondary markets for the games, vs the original digital release. iam8bit etc take it on because there's a lot of expertise and inventory risk with making physical goods, and the original publisher wouldn't want to take that on themselves.
  572. …in reply to @v21
@mountain_ghosts the biggest appeal for the devs is it's nice to have your game in a box. and also a supplementary (and probably largely non-rivalrous) sales stream.
  573. …in reply to @v21
