@jesawyer I liked this talk! A lot I agreed with, going to try to push for your one level doc hierarchy next time I'm on a small team game.

@isosteph brief & only LLMs, but I tried my best in this talk (halfway down) v21.io/blog/how-to-find-things-online

@D_Nye_Griffiths I'd obviously love it if offering public support for NC past the point of it being well known what had happened damaged careers of other columnists. But I'm sceptical it'd spread that way without other media outlets actively chasing the story.

@isosteph thanks :) and yeah, it would be a helpful thing to have around! but also there's a lot to explain & apparently it's difficult to visualise high dimensional state spaces??? or to communicate complex topics accurately to lay audiences

is myfitnesspal still the only decent app for diet tracking? it was annoying to use last time I did this, but also the least annoying. did someone get through the moat of their UGC food info database?
-
@gains_tweets @PixieStitchs will try it! sounds great, glad there's people working hard at the problem

@frozenpandaman I think it would be better for trans kids to not go through a puberty they hate when medicine could avoid that.
-
@frozenpandaman life's not fair, but that's no reason to make it worse than it has to be
-
@frozenpandaman yeah, I get what you're saying, it reads like someone trying out slogans to see what sticks. the actual discussion is complicated - positive decisions versus decisions not to act, children's rights to self-autonomy, medical ethics when it comes to voluntary procedures...
-
@frozenpandaman but ultimately... yeah, I agree with the spirit of it.
-
@Erica_Scourti I remember a bunch of writing about voice assistants, feminised labour etc - could be an angle on it. Helen Hester's “I'd rather be an iphone than a woman” for example
-
@JoshMLabelle @JeffAHamilton yep. easy to do if you playtest it, spot that the change would be good & then just make it, but if you have to make a Jira ticket & run it through a full cycle it's never going to make it.

i spend a bunch of time when i'm coding refining my idea of what i am trying to make, as well as trying to make the thing i started with. maybe if i was just a coder, not a coder-designer-whatever i'd feel differently.

-
@CheerfulGoth ironically they might actually be better commented - the Copilot UX model has you writing a nice descriptive comment & then the AI generates the code to match it

@LukePlunkett the reason i understood is that this is a side effect of them trying to stop people from scraping the site in order to train AIs. which is still a depressing erosion of what was good & open, just systemic in a more difficult way.

-
RT @saywhatagain: This thread is one of the funniest examples I’ve seen of the t-shirt bot problem on here
-
@Sunraged @JolyonMaugham this isn't true in multiple respects: - it was not a NICE decision, but a NHS England interim service specification - the decision only applies to adolescents - a study is being set up to evaluate their use in the future
-
@Sunraged @JolyonMaugham the study will, as you'd imagine, involve prescribing puberty blockers to adolescents, including all of those who are currently being prescribed them
-
@Sunraged @JolyonMaugham although it's a little by the by, NICE's role is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of treatments for the NHS, not to determine which treatments are available in the UK outside of the NHS system

i'm in playtesting mode, so i keep talking about this: when i'm playtesting something, i care about what you do when the game is in your hands *so much more* than i care what you say about it @BenjaminHouy/1670709162769014785

@peternixey i think the phrase "world model" is misleading, because it implies that the model it has resembles the world as we experience it, rather than an almost but not entirely alien set of higher level features.
-
@peternixey Your list of things the AI model would have to understand only apply if you try to understand the model via the kind of natural anthropomorphization that people do to understand processes. It doesn't "understand"!

this example is fascinating for the way it shows the push and pull between two forces - "the bitter lesson", that more data & more compute does better than careful design, and the way that ML never escapes being just a convoluted way of compressing the data set it's trained on @8teAPi/1671519543003422721

I mean, the AI filter stuff is fascinating as someone with a professional interest in casual creators who was recently at a company with an image AI research division. but also it's just not that fun to see strangers do.

this article is correct, the game is good & very funny. but: it talks about the steel beam task near the beginning, but the thing it *doesn't* talk about is the excellent joke at the end of that task. @Kotaku/1673476190634483717
-
at the risk of ruining the joke: you gotta carry this steel beam across some bumpy terrain. it's heavy & awkward & long & you don't have many parts yet. so you (probably) drag it across, losing it repeatedly along the way, finally getting it to it's destination, and...
-
the place you gotta put it is narrow... and tall. everything up until now had a nice easy acceptance zone! and now you gotta make a whole new vehicle just to stand it up on its end.
-
it's a boring joke explained like this, but that's because it's not a joke that works on the level of words. it's a joke told in game design. you had an expectation... and that expectation has been violated in a way that is congruent with everything you were told before.

@pillowfort and meanwhile, like, Marie who was leading WR at the time was doing this shit outside her job, and now she's a full time curator & did the V&A show and generally would not want to put on a big event without getting, y'know, paid for her time.
