@bravemule I disagree entirely, I'm thinking about opening a huge door with a very small key and it's funny and I'm thinking about opening a very small door with a large key and it's also funny.
-
@bravemule just put the tiny key for the big doors inside a wooden box & then lock that wooden box with a padlock which takes a key of a different size
-
@ThomasGrip I've tried it a couple of times, but I don't want to work with code I don't understand, so I've not found it helpful at all.
-
@ThomasGrip can imagine it being helpful if hacking someone else's project apart to get a one off result, or bootstrapping something straightforward. but nah, doesn't seem like it's worth the time to learn
-
@visakanv scary thought! I quite like my current sense of reality. Some things that could do with tweaking and improving, but it does, on the whole, work for me.

@nicolehe a friend who has worked as a game designer but is now publishing her first novel has found that the publisher is unexpectedly into hearing her opinions on the cover design because she used to be a "designer"

@nicolehe but yeah, it is also sometimes annoying and sometimes useful when you want to slip into an adjacent discipline. also the job title "producer", which doesn't exist elsewhere in tech.
-
been playtesting Downpour with people, and making sure to do it on their phones, not mine (for a bunch of reasons). and one thing I've been noticing, testing with women on iOS, is that I need to adjust my breakpoints for small phone sizes. feels like this is a systemic thing???
-
like, what are the impacts of the average hand size of UX designers being larger than the average hand size of their users?
-
@LilCrowther oddly, I'd assume the effect would be the opposite - I find with my layouts, the size of the elements stays the same, I just have to cram it in tighter on smaller phones. there's also the issue of people designing phone apps on a computer, where the accuracy is higher.
-
@isosteph oh, interesting (and a bit worrying, I've got *so much* UI down at that kind of height. although generally not squeezed into the corner)
-
@Y444 @tigershungry was telling me elsewhere about the big dualshocks they made to get a sense of what it was like to use the regular ones with small hands.

@dannybirchall i think a dog who is very visibly excited to do something but is stopping themselves from doing it until they're given the signal clearly is
-
@dannybirchall like, sure, they're doing it because there's an external incentive for that behaviour, but that's also the case when i decide to not have a second slice of cake
-
@dannybirchall it's responding to it's environment and the learned consequences to it's behaviour! we're able to do a bit more abstract reasoning to infer those consequences, but it's still basically the same deal.

@mtrc the normal way to do it is still by writing a server backend that talks to the database and does auth and all that stuff
-
@mtrc PHP is still a decent choice, depending on the scale of the service

@scarygorgon apparently they're gonna have another go at getting the explosives out? if they can find a company that wants to try
-
I'm obviously especially interested in this article because it's my former employer. But I also think outside of that, it's interesting to read this & think about the role of the ERG & the DEI chief in this story. theverge.com/2023/7/7/23787809/niantic-lawsuit-systemic-sexual-bias-pay-disparity
-
the ERG did advocate against management decisions, even when it was uncomfortable. but involvement in the ERG was also brought up as a reason for retaliation. and ultimately the things the ERG could do were constrained by management.
-
I mean, my take away, unsurprisingly, is that ERGs are what an employer wants you to have instead of a union, and these messy half steps are exactly why. That's the structural incentive, although obviously there's a lot of people with good intentions clouding up the issue.
-
@ComicPrintingUK @scarygorgon if you implode at the exact same time you set off the explosion, they cancel out, right?
-
@ComicPrintingUK @scarygorgon i did recently learn that the most advanced tank armour is actually a set of explosive panels they strap to the outside of the tank. then when someone fires an explosive shell at the tank, the tank explodes & explodes the explosion that was gonna try to explode the tank???

-
i would say "i guess we'll just have to wait for the trend to expensively & wastefully burn itself out" but actually we seem to be in an endless IP-based hellworld content landscape, so...
-
@PixieStitchs yeah, i did. if Barbie is unexpectedly a bomb i suspect a lot of this will get put on ice... but they're responding to the success ahead of time, it seems.
-
The first thing that is interesting is that they have the same issues that Twitter has been grappling with for years - the experiences of veteran users & new users are so very different, and trying to widen the funnel for new users involves a lot of stuff old users (rightly) fear
-
interesting learning from Tumblr, who have a big post outlining their product strategy: tumblr.com/staff/722502027705565184/hi-folks-there-seems-to-be-a-lot-of
-
But the main thing is that it's probably a bad idea to post internal product strategy docs without properly contextualising them for users. Of *course* everyone is gonna get upset and think you're gonna yank away the chronological feed.
-
Like, it makes sense to use language like "However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base." internally. But why would you think that was a good thing to tell Tumblr users?? Hire a community manager!

@mariiieclaiiire i got the job when the startup i was at was acquired - before, i was part time & on about 36k. quite a bump!!!
-
@mariiieclaiiire tbh bonuses & stock options aren't really worth thinking about - bonuses are at the whim of management, and stock options... well, it depends on the company stage, but if the company isn't public, best to think of them as lottery tickets

@jaytholen i say this because this is the pivot i've taken... but have you considered pivoting from making videogames to making actual real-user social networks?
-
@jaytholen you're just a few overengineered mod tools away...
-
@jaytholen it's this Downpour project, which is an accessible game making tool with built in sharing & social features... which it turns out is the same thing as a social network
-
@jaytholen the actual thing is an app where you can collage pictures & text, and link to other pages (or urls). Instagram Stories x Twine. not too far from your editor, tbh!
-
@jaytholen i am... also scared of the moderation load. and tbh the path to making money with it is less straightforward than making a nice videogame people pay money for upfront.
-
@jaytholen but it's a fun design space to explore, and tbh videogame people are probably better equipped to explore it than most of the people working in that space
-
