@NilsDeneken yeah, it and Saltsea are on the same cab. I can still see some of my code in the game, obviously a lot changed but walking around feels the same, and some of the nice lighting effects I did, and the little lines showing the water ripples around piers...

a genuinely useful and well thought through deployment of LLM-based technology: hacks.mozilla.org/2024/05/experimenting-with-local-alt-text-generation-in-firefox-nightly/
-
@pettter_e i agree! this will not be better than hand-authored alt text. but i would personally like it if, when i was writing alt text, i could start from a generated description and then edit it, if needed. and it seems like it will be better than an image with no alt text.

@pettter_e right - but what this does, as i read it, is put that capability inside Firefox, rather than some other add-on
-
@nicolehe i went to a talk by someone who is designing games for elephants this last weekend, had a nice chat with them & definitely considered taking a sudden sideswerve with my life and getting a PhD in animal computer interaction

-
@shahidkamal it came from the heart
-
okay i still haven't watched any of it, but my take on the Jenny Nicholson video is that she is approaching it as a fan of Disney and that i am approaching it as a designer of interactive experiences and so we are grasping entirely different parts of the elephant
-
should i have takes on things i have only glancing second hand experience of? sure, why not
-
anyway, what this means is that she sees it and says : wow, this is a lot of money for something that doesn't really work, why did you do this Disney and i say: wow, you got Disney to pay that much money to try this thing no-one else has gotten to work yet, good job designers
-
@pillowfort i believe it! both things. i guess it's: the question i'm interested in is how to make larp accessible to normal people/how to make an immersive theatre show that makes money (same problem, really). which is not the perspective most people are coming to this with!

the coding habit I'd most like to kick is being reluctant to try a thing and see if it works.

I think experience is slowing me down, too often it has worked initially but then that working has turned out to be conditional on other factors I did not apprehend at the time.

But also many times the quickest way to understand a system is to actually make it go, not just peer at the circumstantial evidence.

@nielsen_holly possibly a useful way to think about this is - the question "am I taking up too much space" is less helpful than "is there anyone here who should be given more space".
-
@nielsen_holly it's not about shrinking yourself down, but about giving people more space. and if there's no-one like that - take it for yourself, believe them when they say they're interested.
-
@nielsen_holly (and sometimes people don't want to take up the space! the right balance is not always an equal proportion of time! sometimes people are comfier listening, or just plain more interested in learning new things than talking about stuff they already know about!)

@barneycarroll the design seems pretty solid, can't speak to the implementation but i hear good things. but documentation is sparse, and there's no ecosystem around it yet.

so the complicated thing here is that the image might actually have a tiny bit of AI-based processing done to it. a smart lasso tool, a denoise filter... the boundary of "made with AI" is more porous and socially determined than people realise. @merrph1/1803922150430249100

thinking about how a blur filter is basically the same technology as a generative AI filter. it's just one convolution filter versus 17 of them stacked up on top of each other, weights determined via a formula versus squeezed out of terabytes of training data...
-
which you can see, actually - there's something about the aesthetics of early AI generated images, like those dog images, which feel the same as when you do video feedback loops, passing everything through some random convolution filters...
-
and that aesthetic strikes something with us, maybe because there's something analogous going on in the eye and in the visual cortex. feature detectors catching on ridges of contrast and sending off a spike to their neighbours.
-
@mtrc yeah, but grammar checking on the other hand... i mean, these boundaries are all fine as long as you don't ask a machine to enforce them. ironically enough...
-
@mtrc (saw someone saying the Insta label comes from reading metadata automatically added to the EXIF tags of the export... a good idea when it comes to, like, Midjourney's output, but much tricker for Photoshop)
-
@mtrc yeah - instead you now have artists exporting from Photoshop as PDF, then exporting again from the PDF as JPG when they want to put stuff up on Insta. cursed workflows, but the user finds a way.
