  84. …in reply to @max__drake
@max__drake I'm old fashioned, so it still feels weird to me that there's a whole LLM machinery being used for this. Semantic clustering of text is the task people were working on that led to LLMs - word2vec & SVD and all that multidimensional stuff!
  85. …in reply to @v21
@max__drake I'm not even saying that plugging into LLMs isn't the easiest way to solve this (although the old fashioned way does remove the prompt injection angle, as it has a real separation between data and logic). But it def was possible before LLMs came.

  87. …in reply to @DevRelCallum
@DevRelCallum it seems good, i should go some time!!
  88. …in reply to @max__drake
@max__drake moving stuff around a canvas is different, but also being a games programmer i feel like there's good techniques for that once you have some logic for how you want stuff arranged. but the rest of it... it's just turning words into vectors, innit?
  89. …in reply to @v21
@max__drake whatbeatsrock - turn the words into a vector then flatten it down along a vector representing "better in a fight". infinite craft - add the vectors & then look for the closest word? something like that. which is not to say that they'd work the same... but would be possible.
  90. …in reply to @v21
@max__drake you need an LLM if you want to generate prose again, and shifting the logic above the ML layer means you can use these incredibly expensive models for a wild variety of tasks... but also there's value in using something smaller and more controllable as a building block.

  98. …in reply to @kat31_f
@kat31_f @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest this absolutely does not go against all child protection procedures. giving kids a safe avenue to talk about other adults in their life is important for safeguarding, and reporting everything the kid says to their parents does not provide that.
  99. …in reply to @dirtcup_art
@dirtcup_art high five for "almost have POTS but didn't quite have a high enough heart rate spike on the day" anyway, wishing you luck getting beta blockers anyway, maybe you can claim your POTS symptoms make you anxious or something??
  100. …in reply to @undefined
@neekeetza @kat31_f @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest that's not what I'm saying at all - most parents are great! most teachers are great! but safeguarding is about the times when something has gone wrong, and compelling disclosure to parents when it seems very clearly not in a kid's best interest seems wrong
  101. …in reply to @v21
@neekeetza @kat31_f @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest Most of the time, yes, parents should know what's happening with their kids. But if you legislate that they must always be informed, and something bad is happening (or would happen) at home, then the kid has no one they can tell about it. Which seems bad to me!
  102. …in reply to @undefined
@neekeetza @kat31_f @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest I don't think forcing disclosure to parents reduces the scope of potential abuse by other adults in the child's life. There are already laws against that.
  103. …in reply to @kat31_f
@kat31_f @neekeetza @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest "i'm worried i might be gay. i don't know if i am or not, but my dad said if i was, he would beat me and possibly kick me out of my house" "i am legally obliged to tell him you said this. let's also talk to social services in case you need a foster family after this"
  104. …in reply to @kat31_f
@kat31_f @neekeetza @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest the general principle is the same - for safeguarding purposes, children should be able to talk to other responsible adults in their lives without those conversations being obligatorily reported back to the parents. feel free to swap "gay" for "trans" in my scenario if you like!
  105. …in reply to @v21
@kat31_f @neekeetza @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest the default should be that teachers etc do talk to parents about what's going on with children. but making that legally obligatory puts children at risk, and that's what i'm objecting to.
  106. …in reply to @kat31_f
@kat31_f @neekeetza @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest in the hypothetical scenario I presented I was thinking about a teenager, but I think this principle applies at all ages. the way you as an adult would best respond would vary, of course, but I think the principle still applies.
  107. …in reply to @kat31_f
@kat31_f @neekeetza @Starsaber_222 @AriDrennen @LasagneWest I disagree entirely, but of course I would - I'm trans myself. But honestly the underlying principle is not about transness - it's about acting in the best interests of the child, and not considering the child to be the property of the parents.
