oh, it's worse than that, even? a bit of research reveals that these are "adaptive icons", created in an attempt to formalise the process where OEMs were trying to impose branding on top of Android apps (by putting icons in squircles etc).

an app update happened and now everything is a squircle. except one plant identifying app, which somehow escaped unscathed.

ironic that after destroying the ability to recognise icons by silhouette, Google is now moving to a future where icons must be determined entirely by silhouette
