okay, brief politics thread, because i can't stop myself
-
so what Johnson wants to happen now is that an election gets called next week, for a few weeks before Brexit is currently scheduled to happen. then he can campaign for doing Brexit on the 31st, the Brexit Party won't interfere, he gets a big new majority, 5 years in power.
-
(and presumably by the time those 5 years are up, the whole no-deal Brexit thing will have blown over. or maybe we don't leave on the 31st after all! who knows? either case is beyond the political horizon)
-
as such, he... wanted to lose today's vote? or at least, he knew he would. the priority, in any case, was to get some nice clips to be used in Facebook ads during the election. look tough, face down the remoaners & traitors
-
of course, Labour knows this. and you need a 2/3rds majority to call an election, because the Fixed Term Parliaments Act was not a particularly long-sighted bit of legislation. so... Labour, despite talking about wanting an election loads, might... not vote for one?
-
honestly, i have no idea what happens if the election gets voted down. sounds like the kind of thing I'd go for in a role playing game - the "interesting" outcome. that then turns into a fucking mess for everyone to actually figure out the consequences of.
-
one thing i keep thinking about is all those Tories who voted aye tonight - are they gonna run as independents? it's not actually in Johnson's interests to have them causing chaos outside the party...
