    1. I recently read CLR James' The Black Jacobins. It's a history of the founding of Haiti (a slave rebellion happening during the French Revolution) written in 1938 with a subtext aimed squarely at inspiring African independence.

    It gave me an uncommon sense of being part of a historical continuity, that the events of hundreds of years ago are still shaking out. I would recommend it.
