was reading about the whole Inktober thing, and I think a good lesson to take away from it is that if you want to build a business on a community you should be good at community management (and the Inktober guy isn't, especially)

Inktober backstory: it's a hashtag where people post ink drawings every day in October. the dude who originated it has trademarked the name, and recently sent a (some?) cease and desists to artists selling artbooks with "Inktober"™ in the title. this caused controversy!

I'm not a community manager, and hindsight is 20:20, but I think posting up rules by which people could use the Inktober name before sending C&Ds would've been good. And just generally trying to activate and add to the community in a way that makes it clear the business exists.
