I decided to try theHunter, because I am a fan of this post gamasutra.com/blogs/KarinCederskoog/20170713/301653/theHunter_Call_of_the_Wild__Designing_Believable_Simulated_Animal_AI.php & going for some walks in the countryside looking out for animals sounds great. Also my flatmate has Xbox Game Pass, so it was right there.

so I launched it, do the tutorial bit, shoot the deer that appears right at the trailhead... decide I don't really want to think about trophy organs etc. but tracking some animals to get some photos, even if I have to opt out of all the gamey bits & progression: a nice evening.

go for a nice walk through some bracken, enjoy the changeable weather, learn a bunch of systems & button mappings. I'm getting invested in deer vs rabbit droppings! follow some tracks, lose them, follow some others... hear some noises over a ridge...

I can see a brown back moving up and down through my binoculars. Exciting!! can I creep closer? yes! get out the camera, frame the shot, get a load of this moose, including some where he's staring right at the camera. lined up nicely with a lake backdrop and everything.

anyway, it turns out the Xbox version doesn't do anything when you take pictures. not saved in game or out of game. and the screenshot button is all the way out in an xbox menu.

I guess I could just go for a nice walk in some imaginary woods? and maybe see some animals & maybe not & try not to push the buttons that make me get my gun out. But it doesn't really seem worth it, without the light instrumentalization that taking pictures would provide.
