after some very brief investigation, i have a Theory. the three colours present in the original image are black, white and magenta (for the icons in the top left). the png palette captures this fact, and uses it to make the image smaller (good job, inventors of png files)Permalink Look on archive.org

when Twitter shrinks the image, it has to smush some black and white pixels together, and find some kind of middle colour. like grey? except it doesn't create a new palette, it uses the one it already has. the closest thing to grey... is magenta.Look on archive.org
