I guess it is a sign of my brain rotting in a very specific way that when I think about the whole "wholesome games" category I think of it as a valuable marketing channel outside of the platforms rather than as an artistic movement.

But then again, it feels like a lot of the games within that category are doing it cynically, with an eye mainly on the numbers rather than the emotional experience they're trying to create. So maybe that's fair.

Feels like it's mature as a genre enough for games to deliver on the promises of it but also undercut it in interesting ways. Or am I just describing Undertale?
