the other weekend i went on holiday to edinburgh, and i completely failed to eat any chips & cheese. what a failure.
-
why can't london do chips & cheese? it remains a mystery
-
@jimrossignol i mean, i am sure somewhere does it. but it's not a staple, and it is in edinburgh, and that's a real shame.

@hauntologies ah, good that you figured it out! and: if we can't express unfiltered panic and dismay on private, where can we?

-
@netgal_emi @ldreamfeel i am more cynical and i feel like the game as a way to get money from large orgs who are trying to push one thing or another is normal & common & has been so since I joined the games industry
-
@ldreamfeel @netgal_emi i also feel this is the case for arts funding (i'd like to think that arts funding has a better rate of creating good art than random platform plays... but it's definitely not 100%)
-
@netgal_emi @ldreamfeel i have gotten to do some really good stuff because of arts funding. but there is not a direct and straightforward relationship between doing good stuff & getting money for it. i think that'd be impossible, tbh?
-
@lingmops my interpretation, having heard only some of those words before: you directed development on a big chunk of the thing, enough that there were several teams working on it
-
@netgal_emi @ldreamfeel mainly i just want to be grumpy about people who are good at getting funding because they're good at talking & writing reports, but make (imo) boring & insular art.

@mtrc i should really write a thing about this... but one thing i found pretty eye-opening is how transparent & actively mutable tiktok's algorithm feels to me. ofc they don't explain how it works... but i feel like i'm in a dialogue with it, not at it's mercy.
-
@mtrc none of that stops any of these points from being true. but it feels different. it feels a tiny bit like messing around with a casual creator (except obv, i'm not creating, i'm determining what song i want to see lipsynced) @mtrc/1158675875304562688
-
@mtrc like... i prefer the videos that @3liza curates to the ones i see on my For You page. partly that's because she's picked them... but also she has trained the algorithm better than i have. and she's pretty clearly doing that on purpose. (thread here: @3liza/1120134018601639936)
-

there's i guy i see being retweeted every once in a while. i first knew him on a forum 18 years ago. we both still have the same usernames.
-
@mtrc great points - especially about wanting the media to be focused/not useful. especially because this ties it directly back to videogames, which are kinda defined by not being of any practical value.
-
@mtrc i think the very short duration, and the constant feedback/interaction helps make tiktok so successful - eg netflix has so much less data to work from.
-
@mtrc also, it helps a lot that tiktok launched with the algorithmic feed front-and-center. it sets context for users in a way that twitter's slow and uncertain attempts to change format really don't.
-

@johnnemann i don't quite understand those numbers - are they total budgets or production budgets? the box office figures are gross, not net, too. (i am sure you learn what these numbers mean if you hang around in Hollywood long enough)
-
@johnnemann i did some research! yeah, the numbers are weird. here's a fictional breakdown at the kind of scale AP is working at (stephenfollows.com/films-make-money-pt2-30m-100m-movies/ has a breakdown of average costs & stephenfollows.com/how-a-cinemas-box-office-income-is-distributed/ breaks down how box office grosses are split)

@furkle_ @johnnemann this is helpful! it's like the rule of thumb in boardgames that your RRP should be at least 4x COGS. a magic number that makes sense and is easy to internalise once you've spent several years absorbing the right contexts for it.

@gothdome maybe I am misinterpreting FALC... because I agree with the things you've said, but would not call them FALC.
-
@gothdome like, "all the labour that is necessary to sustain life is fully automated" is less than I'm arguing for, and to me, falls way short of Luxury.
-
@gothdome what I'm honestly more interested in than FALC in this thread, though, is thinking through what labour feels like when you're not alienated from it. when you're not compelled to it. when it is a gift.

@pangmeli @echolalien this summer we went on holiday to Edinburgh, which was nostalgic for me because I went to university there. and the new thing since the last time I've been is that there are now about 4 Harry Potter souvenir shops. idk why now and not a few years ago.
-
@pangmeli @echolalien Harry Potter being a property that's entirely a fake nostalgia for weird British upper class boarding schools...

@isaiah @glowascii it's an old project, so I doubt I'll go back to it now, but I did want to get audio in it! didn't have the skills myself, tho. and the fading to black is good in some situations, but I worry it gives you more of an anxious reason to interact - like, if you don't, it goes away

doing some stuff that uses Angular, and there are just so many... concepts? you just have to kind of give up on being convinced of the usefulness of each idea as you go, learn a lot of stuff on faith, and hope that it all stacks up at the end
-
i mean, i 100% believe that the people who invented each of these things was a smart person trying to solve the general form of a problem they personally have encountered, but
-
i think my experience would be better if my aim was "learn Angular, so I can get a job writing Angular" rather than "make a thing, I guess Angular makes sense for various reasons"

this thread is not intended to put Angular on blast, really. it's intended to put the entire web framework ecosystem on blast.

@marijamdid like, definitely times where I've went: I understand the structural disadvantages people doing stuff with people that are their friends causes, but none of this pays enough to work with people I don't actively enjoy spending time with.

@marijamdid similarly, organising games-adjacent events that are intended to be parties, not networking opportunities.

@marijamdid (obv obv neither of those mean you should be ignoring the fucked up dynamics of the vg industry. but if you're just applying standard advice without critically thinking how it relates to yr thing, yr aims & yr specific situation, yr fucking up anyway)
