  19. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern Yeah, I'd imagine it would be similar to an easy console port (eg Switch without the resource constraints).
  20. …in reply to @v21
@alexhern the thing is there's lots of cool stuff you could do with a Stadia-only game - async multiplayer stuff with sharing save states etc... but no-one sensible would make anything like that unless Google passed along a pile of money
  21. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern yep. i'd also say: if game streaming becomes the dominant thing, then control of the industry is handed to whatever platform runs the streaming services. why would you help someone get into that position for free?

  45. …in reply to @alicemazzy
@alicemazzy sometimes it's useful to have 24 hr coverage. but really, it's that it's nice to live wherever, and a lot of the disadvantages go if you're really committing to remote first work patterns. but to do that, you need p much everyone to be remote.
  46. …in reply to @v21
@alicemazzy the communication advantage of just talking in person is too high, it shortcircuits all the process things would otherwise have to happen via that means that remote people get a full say
  47. …in reply to @alicemazzy
@alicemazzy this makes me think about the bit in Tyranny of Structurelessness about the specific conditions where structurelessness works great
  48. …in reply to @alicemazzy
@alicemazzy yes, but i don't think it's as simple as efficient vs less efficient. s'why my other reply was thinking about Tyranny of Structurelessness - being explicit about criteria & process & how decisions get made has it's own advantages (easier in remote first cultures, I would guess)

@tha_rami @FlorianVltmn @joonturbo @TahitiP4ncake there are art games where the interaction methods are genuinely new : if they're successful, they spend most of their effort teaching people how to interact with them.
  56. …in reply to @v21
@tha_rami @FlorianVltmn @joonturbo @TahitiP4ncake (a reasonable compromise is to rely on interaction methods that people are very likely to know from outside videogames: an instructive (maybe apocryphal?) example is that Solitaire was originally included in Windows to teach & motivate using the mouse)

@dinosaurrparty yeah, I'd agree with all of this. The real thing for me is that it is hard work to view the work from the outside and from all perspectives, and keeping that high bar in place stops you from doing the quick fun low effort spur of the moment work.

@dinosaurrparty yes, for sure! and especially I'm imagining doing something like this, it ending up going viral and having news articles done on it... and thinking about the real lack of thoughtful criticism you'd receive in this kind of situation.

i put my old camp bed, a lantern & a radio up on the tiny beach. it's nice to go up there at night when i can't sleep.

@esdin's island is incredible, as is their tour. this lighthouse was decommissioned due to the advent of GPS, but it's kept operational by the local restaurant (just to the right)

@esdin what do you mean by the offset pattern?
  370. …in reply to @esdin
@esdin oh, yeah! yeah, everywhere else on the island i've been keeping the trees growing in "natural" offsets, so I wanted something formal to contrast against it at the entrance

  378. ACNH take: i don't really want to build up my island, i'd rather it stayed feeling wild & somewhat provisional. i was sad to upgrade out of a tent so soon. i don't really want to fence bits off, or have beautiful gardens, or pick my weeds.
  379. …in reply to @v21
i am quite enjoying the feeling of friction between the logic of development the game is pushing for & my own desires. the game has this real contradictory feeling at the center of it - it can't decide if it's critiquing or celebrating capitalism.
  380. …in reply to @v21
but also i recognise the unnaturalness of many of the real landscapes that we live in. and i'm replicating that! replacing hardwood trees with fruit trees, planting in "natural" patterns, cultivating flowers but keeping the borders ragged...
  381. …in reply to @v21
recommendation for this: the BBC series Unnatural Histories. here's an ep all about how the ways that the Amazon rainforest was shaped by human forces: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxI5v3q4K2isIT49CQjsgHfNArGGb3gwb but of course, also: all British landscapes. it was once continuous forest!!
  382. …in reply to @v21
and i'm enjoying adding little bits of character to the island. not paving it over, but acknowledging our presence. a bothy on the mountainside, a campbed tucked away on the north beach. making it cozy, if not manicured. @v21/1244246004200849408
  383. …in reply to @v21
also all of this is tied into the basically surface level read that the random islands are just colonialism. (i mean, as is your main island, too, just less nakedly extractive). chop every tree down, mine every rock, pick every flower. we'll never come here again, so why worry?
  384. …in reply to @puppymoth
@puppymoth i keep getting Nook Miles incentives to sell weeds. i don't wanna! also then i'll feel bad if i don't pick up all the fallen sticks.
