@Wardrobe55 @GeorgeMonbiot excess deaths are starting to creep up, too (this chart goes up to 2 weeks ago, and follows hospital admissions with a 2-4 week delay, so expect these numbers to go up)
-
@ragzouken card forms which make you enter the type of card... the card number already contains this information...
-
@Wardrobe55 excess deaths = the number of people who died this year, above what you would expect based on statistics from previous years.
-
@Wardrobe55 well, you can see those white bars, early in the first wave : would expect those are largely due to disruption of the health service, but not directly due to covid.
-
@Wardrobe55 ideally we would've had a well functioning tracing system after the first lockdown, an emphasis on ventilation & mask wearing, and continued support to keep pubs etc closed - this lockdown was avoidable. or a shorter lockdown a month ago. but we're here now, so...
-
@Wardrobe55 given the state of testing early in the first wave, I would suspect that there would be many people who died of covid without a positive test (thinking of those who died without being admitted to hospital here)
-
@Wardrobe55 here's the page reporting on excess deaths, feel free to look around & see if you can come up with evidence for your hunches fingertips.phe.org.uk/static-reports/mortality-surveillance/excess-mortality-in-england-latest.html

-
@David_Rudnick i disagree, to the extent that i helped run a festival about it (Now Play This: our whole thing was about showing art & games in a way where the boundaries between them were hard to distinguish - which is also how i feel)
-
@David_Rudnick i also feel like (thought the boundaries, are, again, blurred) that toys, games and videogames are qualitatively different things - though you can play with all of them.
-
@David_Rudnick however, i do feel pretty ambivalent about the effort to make videogames more respected by insisting that they are high culture, not low culture. by putting them in galleries and making rich people feel worthy for paying attention to them. even though, yeah, definitely did that.
-
@David_Rudnick the fact that videogames are kinda trashy, kinda disposable, kinda tawdry... that's one of the best things about them. and people can get very defensive & try to pretend that's not the case, and i think that can be a p embarrassing look.
-
@David_Rudnick oh, for sure - i care a lot about games. but also for me games are (from Bernie DeKoven) about a community of play, a voluntary & shared space where the rules can be constantly renegotiated. even when those are fixed eg Chess, it's about a shared willingness to abide by rules.
-
@David_Rudnick whereas a singleplayer videogame is a predefined system that you manipulate, seeking a particular outcome. interesting wrinkles in how that system operates, discovery, and usually a fictional world to immerse yourself in... but it's not socially constructed in the same way
-
@David_Rudnick and for me a toy is similar, but without any goals set for you - it's about manipulating a system for the pure joy of it
-
@David_Rudnick interesting! but it feels like the art world is doing enough to complicate that without needing to bring videogames into it. performance art, relational aesthetics, all of those exhibitions curated with an eye for Instagram, all challenging the idea of the indifferent object
-
@David_Rudnick but within that frame, a videogame gets closer than a game (by my definitions) to fitting into that category. a videogame can exist without players, a game can't.

@catacalypto fuck disclaiming responsibility, it's your system, you made it, you can turn it off. but in the other hand, what would be the point of making something if you knew what it'd be like when you started out? creation is all about discovery for me.

@yaxuprime @nebogeo @WiLSONSACCOUNT "AI based art" here somehow not including all the things that use AI that's sufficiently boring to no longer count as AI - Instagram filters are built on AI, but don't count.
-
@maxkreminski @hellagrapes yeah - though, "no code" is a helpful if somewhat inaccurate for a tool that's designed to be approachable for people who don't consider themselves coders.
-
@maxkreminski @hellagrapes like, i decided to not add syntax highlighting in CBDQ because i thought it would scare away people who would see it and assume they needed to know how to code. but also it probably is coding, at least once it gets complicated.
-
@maxkreminski @hellagrapes (now I'm wondering where Tracery sits on the Chomsky hierarchy... which is not really the point)
-
@maxkreminski @hellagrapes not to be all "learn 2 code", but there's a sweet spot here for tools which claim to not involve writing code, get users to build increasingly elaborate mental models, and then, like Dumbo and the feather, reveal that it is in fact coding, and that they had the ability all along.

-
@AC_Revolution @pocinplay you can't prevent it unless you heavily restrict the freedom of the tools available. but what really has an impact is how the content is shared - with friends, with a few strangers, to everyone. does content get upvoted, how do you decide what to show, what flagging systems...
-
@AC_Revolution @pocinplay the most important thing is to treat this as one of the core problems you have to design for upfront - if you design the system, then tackle this as a detail afterwards, you're probably fucked.
-
@AC_Revolution @pocinplay the other thing is: if it's expressive enough and widely shared enough, you probably need to have human moderators in the loop. so then part of the task is designing their tools, trying to make that job more tolerable and efficient (aims which are in conflict, of course)
-
@AC_Revolution @pocinplay The games labour movement could do with talking more about the working conditions and pay of these (almost always outsourced) workers.

@lil_mermaid one arrived in the post for me just this morning
-
my earphones sometimes seem like there's a short between the mic & the speakers, so I was looking for a new pair of headphones. I'm not leaving the house much these days, definitely not cycling, so don't need earphones, just something light.
-
so I ordered that - got a soldering iron, know how to fuck around with wires. and today it arrived... and I absolutely cannot find the busted pair of PortaPros. looked in all of my many boxes of slightly broken electronics.
-
I liked my old pair of PortaPros, but they got busted, and anyway didn't have a mic. So I went looking for a set of those that do have a mic - but the mic option makes them stupid expensive. But I did find a cable with a mic on it, designed to replace the original cord.
-
now added to with: object that needs to be kept track of until original object turns up
-
frustration of being unable to find object
-
also, between ordering the replacement cable & it showing up, I have bought two pairs of earphones from AliExpress (in the singles day sale, for a total of around £30). the wireless ones have already arrived, and seem to work great. Tronsmart Onyx Ace, if you're curious.

@LucieHolliday @JolyonMaugham honestly this is one of the tragedies of the polarised debate on trans issues - a given trans person is likely to agree strongly about wanting to expand the permissible range of gender expression (for all genders). but it's dangerous to express that publicly.
-
@LucieHolliday @JolyonMaugham a hypothetical example : if you are a trans woman, but sometimes like to dress in traditionally masculine clothing, that can be used (for example, by doctors, when seeking transition care) as evidence that you're not really a woman, shouldn't you think a bit more about this
-
@LucieHolliday @JolyonMaugham that's not every trans person. but the effort of shaping your story so that it is legible within traditional gender norms is definitely something that a lot of trans people face. and... we're the ones who best know how arbitrary & mutable gender is

okay, so, on cooking shows, they often make sure to measure ingredients into little dishes, which is good prep but also presumably so as to not give free sponsorship to brands. but it makes the shows a little worse for the home chef, it widens the gap between screen & kitchen.
-
so what would be better is if they use shit from the jar or packet or whatever, and stuck big labels over it. and then why not make the labels funny? I think that could be a good bit.
-
@alexhern cooking is easy enough! washing up is the annoying bit! most of the time I structure the stuff I cook so that I can do chopping & prep while stuff is on the hob, just to be ultra streamlined.

@mspowahs @mcclure111 yeah - Haxe came out of work to make alternative backends for Flash, and people I know who use it largely came from Flash. the Flash API compatibility stuff is now optional, and it's not just a pure recreation/compatibility layer now - rightly so, I think.
