@Wardrobe55 @GeorgeMonbiot excess deaths are starting to creep up, too (this chart goes up to 2 weeks ago, and follows hospital admissions with a 2-4 week delay, so expect these numbers to go up)

@ragzouken card forms which make you enter the type of card... the card number already contains this information...
  15. …in reply to @Wardrobe55
@Wardrobe55 excess deaths = the number of people who died this year, above what you would expect based on statistics from previous years.
  16. …in reply to @Wardrobe55
@Wardrobe55 well, you can see those white bars, early in the first wave : would expect those are largely due to disruption of the health service, but not directly due to covid.
  17. …in reply to @v21
@Wardrobe55 ideally we would've had a well functioning tracing system after the first lockdown, an emphasis on ventilation & mask wearing, and continued support to keep pubs etc closed - this lockdown was avoidable. or a shorter lockdown a month ago. but we're here now, so...
  18. …in reply to @Wardrobe55
@Wardrobe55 given the state of testing early in the first wave, I would suspect that there would be many people who died of covid without a positive test (thinking of those who died without being admitted to hospital here)
  19. …in reply to @Wardrobe55

  106. …in reply to @David_Rudnick
@David_Rudnick i disagree, to the extent that i helped run a festival about it (Now Play This: our whole thing was about showing art & games in a way where the boundaries between them were hard to distinguish - which is also how i feel)
  107. …in reply to @v21
@David_Rudnick i also feel like (thought the boundaries, are, again, blurred) that toys, games and videogames are qualitatively different things - though you can play with all of them.
  108. …in reply to @v21
@David_Rudnick however, i do feel pretty ambivalent about the effort to make videogames more respected by insisting that they are high culture, not low culture. by putting them in galleries and making rich people feel worthy for paying attention to them. even though, yeah, definitely did that.
  109. …in reply to @v21
@David_Rudnick the fact that videogames are kinda trashy, kinda disposable, kinda tawdry... that's one of the best things about them. and people can get very defensive & try to pretend that's not the case, and i think that can be a p embarrassing look.
  110. …in reply to @David_Rudnick
@David_Rudnick oh, for sure - i care a lot about games. but also for me games are (from Bernie DeKoven) about a community of play, a voluntary & shared space where the rules can be constantly renegotiated. even when those are fixed eg Chess, it's about a shared willingness to abide by rules.
  111. …in reply to @v21
@David_Rudnick whereas a singleplayer videogame is a predefined system that you manipulate, seeking a particular outcome. interesting wrinkles in how that system operates, discovery, and usually a fictional world to immerse yourself in... but it's not socially constructed in the same way
  112. …in reply to @v21
@David_Rudnick and for me a toy is similar, but without any goals set for you - it's about manipulating a system for the pure joy of it
  113. …in reply to @David_Rudnick
@David_Rudnick interesting! but it feels like the art world is doing enough to complicate that without needing to bring videogames into it. performance art, relational aesthetics, all of those exhibitions curated with an eye for Instagram, all challenging the idea of the indifferent object
  114. …in reply to @v21
@David_Rudnick but within that frame, a videogame gets closer than a game (by my definitions) to fitting into that category. a videogame can exist without players, a game can't.

  223. …in reply to @v21
@AC_Revolution @pocinplay the most important thing is to treat this as one of the core problems you have to design for upfront - if you design the system, then tackle this as a detail afterwards, you're probably fucked.
  224. …in reply to @v21
@AC_Revolution @pocinplay the other thing is: if it's expressive enough and widely shared enough, you probably need to have human moderators in the loop. so then part of the task is designing their tools, trying to make that job more tolerable and efficient (aims which are in conflict, of course)

  349. okay, so, on cooking shows, they often make sure to measure ingredients into little dishes, which is good prep but also presumably so as to not give free sponsorship to brands. but it makes the shows a little worse for the home chef, it widens the gap between screen & kitchen.
  350. …in reply to @v21
so what would be better is if they use shit from the jar or packet or whatever, and stuck big labels over it. and then why not make the labels funny? I think that could be a good bit.
