First Last Snow by Max Gladstone Book 4! This is a prequel, where we get to see two characters we've previously seen as somewhat cryptic badasses being still very badass but also more emotionally vulnerable. It's about... probably the closest analogue is the Arab Spring?
  7. …in reply to @v21
Four Roads Cross by Max Gladstone Book 5 (the numbering within the titles is the chronological order, which is kind of impressive pre-planning). This is the fairly direct sequel to the 1st. All the same cast in new configurations. I liked the idea of the underwater vampires.
  8. …in reply to @leonard_ritter
@leonard_ritter They wouldn't even need to first party it, just.... pay very large sums of money for exclusives
  9. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern @leighalexander imo a even bigger strategic error than not spending enough money on first party dev was basically not spending any money on exclusives or to get studios to port to Stadia. In a world where you can earn back development costs just from an Apple Arcade or Epic deal...
  10. …in reply to @v21
@alexhern @leighalexander you don't even need to make it yourself or take on any of the game dev risk! you just need to spend some money!
  11. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern @leighalexander oh, really? my impression (on the indie games side) was that it wasn't really worth talking to them, they weren't interested in even paying porting costs. at which point everyone rightly concluded Stadia was not a bet they wanted to take with their own money.

  72. the thing about this fatigue is that I still have the instincts & the ability to move through the world in the ways I did before. but afterwards I'm like... oof. I definitely should have walked up that staircase a bit slower.
  73. I don't really care too much about Marvel films, but this is a good thread on previz & the blending of acting/animation @timoni/1357992388577218561
  74. …in reply to @v21
coming from games, hearing about the traditional film production process scares the shit out of me. that you do all of this stuff, write, shoot, edit, but you can't see the film until the very end of the process? but what if its bad & you didn't notice?
  75. …in reply to @v21
so yeah, the idea that you can get a shitty version of the film upfront & mess around with it before doing the expensive bits... I don't see why you wouldn't (if you can afford a previz studio).
  76. …in reply to @v21
some interesting wrinkles in the linked video about the relationships between directors and previz studios, tho- fine for Marvel, but if you wanted to do something new with pacing or how action scenes are presented, feels like the director would need to be very hands on early on.
  77. …in reply to @v21
the other thing this works nicely with is the LED wall tech used on The Mandalorian. feels like this technique is gonna be everywhere in a decade's time. fxguide.com/fxfeatured/art-of-led-wall-virtual-production-part-one-lessons-from-the-mandalorian/
  78. …in reply to @v21
being able to see your CG background in real time as you're shooting, and make adjustments to it on the fly... again, game dev background, but it seems so obviously superior to shipping off footage to CG studios to crunch over, only seeing the end result months later.
  79. …in reply to @v21
idk the exact workflow here, but I assume you start with previz, polish up the background elements til they're at quality, then shoot using the LED wall, and then add back in whatever foreground CG you need using the previz as reference.
  80. …in reply to @v21
the more generalisable lesson is that real time feedback is super powerful and tools that give you it have a huge advantage over those that don't. close down that feedback loop! the more iteration cycles, the better the thing!
  81. …in reply to @v21
    real time rendering forever!!!
  82. …in reply to @ohhoe
@ohhoe I haven't seen the show & am not very tempted to! but this technique just makes sense. they used a smaller version of it for Gravity to get good lighting on faces, and it was exciting then, but now it seems to be properly versatile.
  83. …in reply to @v21
@ohhoe and cheap enough to let you do constant CG backgrounds on a TV show budget!
  84. …in reply to @dvsch
@dvsch I mean, ideally this stuff lets you mess around more because you can do it cheaply. You can take more risks because they're cheaper risks. But there is also the over-polishing trap, where you iterate too much & lose the life of it.
  85. …in reply to @v21
@dvsch there's a push & pull between these two techniques here - previz lets you mess with camera angles & FX early on, but then those choices are more locked down later. but the LED wall stuff opens it back up & allows that stuff to change while shooting.
  86. …in reply to @dvsch
@dvsch yeah - but for this stuff, the last iteration is the final render from the post fx studio. remember a doc on Fury Road effects, talking about using CG to replace lips in order to change the delivery of a line of dialogue. everything still up for play until the end.
  87. …in reply to @dvsch
@dvsch yes, this is my general feeling about CG for films.
  88. …in reply to @hoskingc
@hoskingc makes sense! and hopefully this stuff can help with that, like if the director can see a shonky composite in real time they can say "no, taller than that" or whatever. or even robotic arms to move around a tennis ball for them to look at.
