@glowascii thanks for the rec! and yes, it is very good, isn't it?
  14. …in reply to @nd_kane
@nd_kane @tigershungry it would be very satisfying to shake eggs out of a tree and see them all bounce and shrink down to nothing within some flowers. maybe that's my new task.
  15. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern it's a shame that these people are the face of "5G is bad" when 5G is, in fact, bad
  16. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern impact on weather forecasting, mainly. though I also feel a bit dodgy about the way that it can be used for fine-grained location tracking, including maybe, hypothetically, people without phones?
  17. …in reply to @v21
@alexhern & given the density of masts required & the poor penetration of the signal it doesn't feel super widely useful. and the Internet is basically fast enough already??? (I might well be proved wrong about that one)
  18. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern so, active location tracking: more base stations, closer apart gives a higher resolution of where you are. plus beamforming gives a direction from each mast. so phones with 5G can be pretty precisely located by the networks.
  19. …in reply to @v21
@alexhern passive: stuff like this researchgate.net/publication/336029071_Cooperative_Passive_Coherent_Location_A_Promising_5G_Service_to_Support_Road_Safety - basically, 5G beamformed signals are able to act as radar systems. which is not stuff that's currently being used/rolled out as far as i know, but i am slightly iffy on the infrastructure for that being created.
  20. …in reply to @v21
@alexhern (there's proof of concepts doing this with wifi signals, too - but that needs a van parked outside your house to track your movements inside. this (i think?) needs firmware/software across the cell network instead)
  21. …in reply to @alexhern
@alexhern i have not been hot on the difference between mmwave & non-mmwave (& the details of the UK's rollout). it is a good point!

  106. …in reply to @v21
so I launched it, do the tutorial bit, shoot the deer that appears right at the trailhead... decide I don't really want to think about trophy organs etc. but tracking some animals to get some photos, even if I have to opt out of all the gamey bits & progression: a nice evening.
  107. …in reply to @v21
go for a nice walk through some bracken, enjoy the changeable weather, learn a bunch of systems & button mappings. I'm getting invested in deer vs rabbit droppings! follow some tracks, lose them, follow some others... hear some noises over a ridge...

I guess I could just go for a nice walk in some imaginary woods? and maybe see some animals & maybe not & try not to push the buttons that make me get my gun out. But it doesn't really seem worth it, without the light instrumentalization that taking pictures would provide.

I've carried that attitude into design work, too. maybe I'm wrong! I'm confident enough to be happy moving forward with it - but if someone else's understanding is different, then I want to hear it. everything is a little bit provisional (until it's too late to change it)

when Twitter shrinks the image, it has to smush some black and white pixels together, and find some kind of middle colour. like grey? except it doesn't create a new palette, it uses the one it already has. the closest thing to grey... is magenta.
  258. …in reply to @v21
after some very brief investigation, i have a Theory. the three colours present in the original image are black, white and magenta (for the icons in the top left). the png palette captures this fact, and uses it to make the image smaller (good job, inventors of png files)

@yaxu @thormagnusson @evanraskob @sc3d you can have DIY venues further out... but then they can't really server a community based in "London" but only the folks who live out in that direction. and until people start identifying & forming communities based on those sub-areas, it won't really work.

@moreelen yeah - the way that this process gets the stuff into the game as early as possible, and so you can build out dialogue, test pacing etc etc while the animations are getting made is super smart

@moreelen also the way that there's a ton of game specific stuff in the system. the three head poses! lipsync on a separate track. it's not a "here's the system, do what you can with it"
