RT @FoldableHuman: Holy crap, I'm reeling. I just learned there's an entire network of bootleg pizza delivery companies in Calgary.
-
relatedly: python's class system is so weird and intricate and baroque and on the face of it simple, but actually full of special cases.
-
oh, no, that's a class dictionary, you need to declare it in __init__ if you want it to be an instance dictionary...
-
@tef TIL about class dictionaries
-
@tef it was fine once i discovered that they were a thing. but i did not expect them to be a thing. i am going to try not to learn more.
-
RT @MarekKapolka: sewer hands...

that said! Jupyter notebook is good enough I now *get* developing in a REPL. though they're still awkward.

what is the absolute tip-top REPL development experience? (ideally, suited for doing stuff with sound and image, as that's most my stuff)
-
@NathanDitum i'm still looking forward to hearing if the Nekoatsume movie is any good or not
-
@NathanDitum also, the Lego movies kiiiiinda are. obviously the chain of adaption is kinda murky. but they're good in the way the games are
-
@infovore yeah, mainly just curious as to the ergonomics, not looking for a new toolset day-to-day
-
@infovore i am writing python because the next bit of this project is wrangling Tensorflow, and that's scripted in Python
-
@vaporstack i don't do enough to be worth it (or: i am in Unity 80% of the time, so I'd build [different] tools there)

-
@glassarmy SAME
-
@glassarmy it'll be okay! we'll be okay!
-
@rclarke i look forward to those things... but also, they're not particularly transformative? just improvements to what's there.
-
@rclarke i would like to not charge my phone as often, yes, but i'll still basically use it in the same way

@jawsew yeah, that's often how it works for people.

@jawsew it's probably a fair tradeoff for not having to think about where rent is coming from very often?

@lifewinning oh, huh, i owe some people some emails, i just remembered
-
this is a bit oooh. github extension for unity early preview. wouldn't it be nice if it was good? unity.github.com/
-
@chrisoshea pretty sure it's not. it's from github, not sure of unity's involvement
-
@haikus_by_KN i wish i was - couldn't find someone to pay for me, and couldn't justify it myself ...
-
@chrisoshea oh! uh... i guess so? obv shaped onto git workflow, or even the github app's take on the git workflow
-
hah - the github app is very branching-focused (unsurprisingly), and branching is Bad in Unity. I wonder how they're squaring that circle?
-
@pozorvlak so, code is fine, same as code everywhere. but the big blobs of scene description & object setup, in long machine-written YAML?
-
@pozorvlak here is a screenshot of a file you do not want to manually fix merge conflicts within
-
@paulnakata @pozorvlak i mean, these are even really binaries... but almost all coding i do also needs scene changes, so *shrug*
-
@pozorvlak they have gotten good about modifying it as little as possible, making it more human-readable, etc etc
-
@pozorvlak but still: you do not want to do feature branches. and you probably want to have some kind of manual locking on scene files.
-
@pozorvlak (which is just telling people they're good to mess with stuff, in the size of team i'm in)
-
@paulnakata @pozorvlak yeah, i get you, and it makes sense - but that doesn't make it good to develop on feature branches, still?
-
@paulnakata @pozorvlak like, the locking is great for multiple people working on one branch, not for the multiple branches workflow
-
@paulnakata @pozorvlak (where those branches want to modify the same big-blob files)
-
@paulnakata @pozorvlak maybe it'd be worth restructuring new projects to have all their config in ScriptableObjects, not scenes, tho..?
-
@joonturbo yeah - would be curious to poke around other people's big Unity games' project structures, bet there's lotsa variety.
-
@paulnakata so, the issue is : branch1 makes necessary edits to main.unity, so does branch2. unless we get lucky and those edits merge, :<
-
i was trying to find those iconic sexy lady eyes, but have failed so far...

-
@paulnakata @sh4na looking into this a bit more, it seems the chances of a happy merge goes up with docs.unity3d.com/Manual/SmartMerge.html ...
-
@katbamkapow ahhh! this is lovely to hear (for secret reasons, also just because it looks nice and hearing nice things about games is good)
-
@paulnakata @sh4na (it will take some very heavy encouragement that it's definitely always fine, before i am able to trust it)
-
@katbamkapow wait, the reasons aren't secret, it's also at Now Play This, we announced this.

and then in the comments section there's some people being all "hey, if you're into this, come play, we're friendly, it's fun"

and then there's someone arguing against them and then they're saying "you can only say this because we're not on <official forum>"

@lizardengland warm... with hazelnut... mmmm
-
@lizardengland (ignoring article because I don't want to read about BOTW) I think it's desirable to sometimes not make a self-contained game
-
@lizardengland like, throwing up your hands isn't helpful - but designing around external context is really underappreciated
-
@lizardengland there's uncontroversial stuff - learning high-level tactics & the existence of a metas in MOBAs
-
@lizardengland or more subtle stuff, like @radiatoryang's conscious shaping of the conversation around his games with blog posts & gifs
-
@lizardengland i have a pet theory that the inscrutability of Pokemon Go and Minecraft helped sharing - you had to engage others to learn
-
@ADAMATOMIC @Ludonaut @ranarama @zarawesome i looked up the dates, and it came out a few months later!
-
@legobutts my complaints were: 1) unsatisfying movement 2) was kinda boring, second-to-second. which other flash games knocked out the park.
-
@lizardengland yeah, i'm not arguing for inscrutability, per se, more to expand the scope of design from the inside of the game
-
@lizardengland to the whole experience (a lot of which is out of your hands, of course - but so can be the inside)
-
@lizardengland and, like - the number of people who see some trace of the game will always be larger than the number who Actually Play It
-
@legobutts I liked a lot about it - but all a bit more zoomed out, and that stuff wasn't quite enough to get me past.
-
@legobutts i played the shit out of neopets (when i was much younger, tbf)

@katbamkapow I... played CKII for a bit and had a really good time, but felt like my enjoyment would end once I fully understood the game.

@katbamkapow I guess what I am saying is that a part of the appeal for me is the process of gaining understanding the UI (& systems)

Thoughts on Gravity Rush: the world isn't as pretty as 2... Partly it's lower res, but mainly it's just brown and muddy.
-
There's a kinda charming PS2 chunkiness to the UI and map icons - held over from the Vita. Makes it nicely unfussy, though.
-
It's got the boring open world structure - side & challenge missions, collectibles, unlocking homes, etc etc. It doesn't entirely know why.
-
And you've gotta do a load of stuff to extend your gravity powers (it starts okay, tho). I guess I should feel lucky there's no crafting?
-
But the flying is great, though! Whooshing around super naturally, learning to hover right before you land to avoid the bad animation. Joy.
-
Even doing a bullshit fetch quest is kinda fine when you start by squinting up into the sky and hurtling into it.
-
Also the main character is nicely flippant, and the plot never takes itself too seriously. Fin.
