@maxo531 @thejollycrank @prdoyle @RobinMazumder @Terrilltf you could decrease that subsidy if you stopped charging for transit
  24. …in reply to @maxo531
@maxo531 @thejollycrank @prdoyle @RobinMazumder @Terrilltf you were talking about passenger-mile subsidies before, so i thought that was what you cared about? or are you upset that roads are fully subsidised?
  25. …in reply to @v21
@maxo531 @thejollycrank @prdoyle @RobinMazumder @Terrilltf (fwiw, i live in london, where transit is much more common as a commuting mode than cars, and where car usage is charged for... so my perspective might be different to yours)

@maxo531 @thejollycrank @prdoyle @RobinMazumder @Terrilltf @RobinMazumder/1146091666937450496 and maybe not! but i am pretty sure that 2 cents is not a total cost that factors in subsidies to car manufacturers & gas companies
  27. …in reply to @maxo531
@maxo531 @thejollycrank @prdoyle @RobinMazumder @Terrilltf have you got any evidence for saying that most Londoners would prefer to commute by car? it doesn't match my experience at all
  28. …in reply to @v21
@maxo531 we also have an extensive and well developed public transport system, much of which was developed within the last century. i know transit wouldn't make sense for many Americans right now. but that's no reason not to improve it.
  29. …in reply to @maxo531
@maxo531 @thejollycrank @prdoyle @RobinMazumder @Terrilltf but road and parking capacity is a subsidy in itself! what you're saying is that where the roads are better than transit, driving wins out. which, yes, true, but that doesn't mean you should choose to builds roads & parking rather than transit & walkability
  30. …in reply to @maxo531

@Nifflas hm, well. two parts to this: 1) are they being an asshole to the contestants. probably! but also they could be considerate when the cameras aren't on. a set of performers inhabiting roles. compare: the host seems nice but the show is exploitative
  75. …in reply to @v21
@Nifflas 2) are they normalising a culture of being an asshole? sounds like it! but I'd probably call that evil, rather than being an asshole? (evil = knowingly making the world worse for personal benefit. I don't have a pithy definition of asshole, but it's not that, I am pretty sure)
  76. …in reply to @v21
@Nifflas Personally, I would like to be careful not to condemn people who are playing up to a role, and making it clear it's a role. Let's not ban heels.

@thecatamites it turns out that it is entirely possible to run a whole career/studio via a series of deals to provide games to various companies who want to pauly over the odds for games in order to make various platforms seem more appealing, and never actually have to sell to consumers
  113. …in reply to @v21

  114. …in reply to @v21
@thecatamites the thing is, tho... it's entirely unnecessary for the platforms to succeed. a lot of people paid their mortgages with money paid out by makers of VR headsets to make it look like VR was the future of games...
  115. …in reply to @v21
@thecatamites but then... the skills and experiences this incentivizes seem very similar to the skills and experiences incentivized by public arts funding systems driven by a desire that projects demonstrate "innovation" and "excellence".
  116. …in reply to @undefined
@thecatamites The money ultimately comes from elsewhere, like Dubais sovereign wealth fund, or Facebooks monopoly ad money, or school districts paying Microsoft for their Office 365 licenses. Its not really to do with games at all.

  353. i need a new phone to replace my Mi A1 with a cracked screen, so i poked around & saw that the A3 was coming out! it looks great! and the white version has this nice hologram effect in the case, and you can get it with twice the storage space...
  354. …in reply to @v21
and, sure, it's not out in the UK yet, but I can import it... and now I'm hung up on this one specific model & configuration of a phone, which is the only one that's not being sold in Europe yet, or available to import with less than a month and a half lead time
  355. …in reply to @v21
and the problem is that it's not quite impossible, there's probably a way to get what i now have decided is necessary, which means it's hard to let go & get a slightly more available version. or even a different perfectly nice phone.
  356. …in reply to @v21
which turns looking at the feed into this active participation in the algorithm. i'm actively steering through the latent space of possible tiktok videos, and i'm doing this on a moment-to-moment basis, based on exactly how long i watch each video for.
  357. …in reply to @v21
like, this covers some basics vice.com/en_us/article/kzdwn9/tiktok-cant-save-us-from-algorithmic-content-hell but the really wild feeling is that the main way i train the algorithm is not by liking shit or whatever. it's just by watching some stuff for slightly longer than other stuff
  358. …in reply to @v21
Goodhart's Law says something like: if you change a system by optimizing against something that's connected to the thing you care about, then the two things will stop being connected. here, that's stuff you wanna watch & how long you watch a video for.
  359. …in reply to @v21
and the posters know this too - people posting stuff with a "wait for it..." bit, they're trying to get more viewers by getting longer watch times on their content. so i'm trading off "is this payoff going to be worth being recommended more stuff like this?"
  360. …in reply to @v21
also, the thing that's kinda got to be said: one characteristic of YouTube's content is that it picks up on politics & obsession and magnifies that. TikTok picks up on horniness & magnifies that.

update: approximately the 24th listing i looked at on aliexpress did have the white 128gb model, no sus bit at the bottom of the page talking about how they reflash it themselves, and 2-3 week shipping. so that's now ordered.

@Seemo @alexvscoding i mean, a clear example of this was grace releasing frog detective under her name. then realising that that kind of sucks for all the other people who contributed. even though she started making it as a solo thing. so frog detective 2 is coming out credited to worm club.
